IT'S OUT!
NOVEMBER TO BE COLDER AND SNOWIER THAN LAST YEAR FOR UK

November 2009 was on the whole a very mild, stormy month across much of the areas which ended up cold and snowy last year but I am seeing a pattern unfold which suggests the opposite this November as opposites are showing up in the current and evolving pattern.

With the slow start to what became the worst winter in 31 years across the UK and an extremely snowy winter for the Eastern US (especially the Mid-Atlantic), this winter will get off to a fast and hard start with a period of snow and cold which may impact most areas of the UK, the opposite to last year when our pattern was dominant with mild air from the Atlantic and torrential and record-breaking rains, especially Cumbria as well as Dumfries and Galloway.

Cities such as Inverness, Perth, Dundee, Edinburgh and across to Glasgow should see their first snows of the year during November along with days which under clear skies and high pressure in control should hold snow on the ground for at least a few days if not nearer a week. Highs may find it tough reaching 2 or 3C by day within town and city centres, shektered areas may fail to get above freezing and nights may get to the lowest "November values" in perhaps 10 or more years with expectations of lows in the cities themselves getting to perhaps -3 to -6C. Highland areas may see lows in the cold sheltered Glens get into double digits below freezing with plenty of snowcover to bounce any solar energy quickly back to space.

Northern areas of England and perhaps even spreading south through the Midlands, the southwest and even London, yes London may get a taste of snow, whether it lies or not is a good question but certainly a period of cold weather should find it's way down throughout the UK landmass bringing central London into sub-freezing territory and perhaps a few nights getting down to -3C or colder in outlying rural areas, Benson, Oxfordshire would be a good bet for that number!

Though I'm expecting a period of substantial cold by "November standards" and some snow, I'm not hung up on the idea of a brutal and frozen month ahead but rather a taste of real winter weather which may make folks believe a repeat of last winter is upon us.

For my thoughts on the winter ahead, you'll find out in detail, October 31st.

Vagaries of the Weather
India & Sub-Continental Asia Weather

1.Severe Cyclonic Storm "Giri" has tracked NE and is about to cross the land at Myanmar coast. The "away from the Indian coast" tracking is due to the W.D. heading eastwards, and was forecasted by Vagaries in the initial stage itself. With core pressure at 959 mb,and winds at 85 knots, it is likely to be harsh and fierce in Myanmar.

2.The mentioned W.D. is now active and precipitating rain in Kashmir and H.P, and overcast conditions in Punjab. Srinagar is 10c and raining at mid day on Friday. Expect snow in the higher ranges. The max. day temperature yesterday was 24c, and it has been at 25c average for the last week there. Amritsar is 20c at mid day today. Highs have been in the 30s last week. A cooling down, long overdue, will herald a seasonal change not only in the North, but also will be beneficial for the setting in of the NEM, one more +ve factor in addition to the yesterday's discussion on NEM.

3.The trough "dropping down" along the west coast, discussed in Vagaries in the last 2 articles, has almost formed an off shore trough, something similar to the seasonal off shore trough, and falls up to Karnataka coast ! An off shore trough along the west coast on 22nd. October !! Somewhat uncommon ! Shows effective rains along the west coast south of Goa. As a reader mentions of heavy monsoon rains from Udipi.

More on this in evening report.

MILDER AIR IS BACK, CERTAINLY ACROSS CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN SCOTLAND, STILL COLDER AIR RULES THE HIGHLANDS ON NORTHWARD BUT EVEN UP THERE, IT'S NOT AS COLD AS IT HAS BEEN... HEAVY RAINS PERSISTED THROUGHOUT TODAY WITH FRESH BANDS MOVING IN FROM N. IRELAND INTO THE CENTRAL BELT AND THE SOUTHERN HIGHLAND REGION.

Thanks for reading.
