Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

The 11-degree low at Pleasant Valley, Montana was the coldest of autumn so far across Lower 48, but it's into the -10s up in central Alaska now!

Whilst temperatures by night slowly drop off into the lower teens in the colder spots of the Northern Rockies at this point of the year, Alaska is now well into sub-zero territory with even September seeing sub -10F lows which broke records and climatalogical hisotyr as well as long-range forecasts point to a severe winter this year up over the northern and nrthwest region of North America!

On the morning of the 16th of October, Fort Yukon, a classic cold spot in the heart of interior Alaska saw a low drop to 15 below zero (according to the USA Today stats), cold for sure, but it's not unusual for mid-October to see these types of lows as far north and as far inland from the modifying influences of sea and ocean.

As for the lower 48, this point in October typically sees lows drop into the 10s with the odd October seeing lows drop towards the zero mark.. This year hasn't seen a sub-10 degree low just yet and this morning saw the closest appraoch to single-digit territory with an 11-degree at at Pleasant Valley, Montana. It's now that ever colder air mass drop southwards into the Western US and with a dusting or an inch or two coating of snow to seal the heat of the ground off and drive a cold Canadian air mass down over a high-elevation mountain valley or basin where the first zero or colder low is going to occur.

Here are some classic high-elevation cold spots that are most likely to achieve this

Stanley, Idaho
West Yellowstone, Montana
Leadville, Colorado
Bodie State Park, California
Shirley Basin, Wyoming

These are just a few!

The lack of "very cold air mass" may be holding back to first sub-zero low in the mountains of the West but as the heat shrinks over the Lower 48 and this gives way for Canadian cold air masses to progress south and cover more gound will the oppertunity to drive those night temperatures down into "frigid territory". It's still early and it's only a mater of time before the Pacific storm train cranks and colder air filters down from the Northwest territories, the Yukon and Alaska where the air is cold enough to support single-digit highs and -10 to -20 degree lows around the Arctic Circle, this air is going to continue to penetrate further and further south over the next couple of months as daylight continues to shorten, especially over the far north of North America, soon enough, daylight will be gone conpletely and each and everyday will remain below zero!
