Winter Returns in Spectacular Fashion to Scotland
Heavy snow along the A96 between Elgin and Huntly is accompanied by Thunder and Lightning whilst a waterspout is seen over North Sea off Aberdeen

By Mark Vogan

Whilst my typical drive between Bathgate and Inverness was somewhat benign during the early hours of this morning, it wasn't benign for fellow road users this morning.

Whilst listening to northern Scotland's MFR radio station, reports where filtering in from drivers that heavy snow was showering down on several spots across the north and despite the fact that skies couldn't be clearer on the stretch between Grangemouth, Stirling and along the A9 to Perth, it was snowing on the A9 at Aviemore with a temperature at 28 degrees (-2C).

By the time I reached Perth and headed the 111 mile stretch to Inverness which took me up through the Cairngorm National Park and within 2 miles of Aviemore, the snow showers from just an hour and a half ago has past and skies remained clear.

Really temperatures weren't too cold over the Highlands but this was helped by a strong north wind, therefore 30 to 32 degree air in a wind blowing at 20 to 30 mph, didn't feel warm!!

The only snow I really saw was at the side of the road on the highest reaches of the A9. The lying snow was first seen just snow and over Drumnochter Summit, elevated over, 1500 feet above sea level and often bleak.

IT WAS COLDER IN THE LOWLANDS THAN HIGHLANDS THANKS TO LESS WIND

Due to protection from the higher terrain of the central Highlands, once south of Pitlochry and throughout the Central Belt, though there may have still been a slight wind or breeze, the coldest temperatures were witnessed from just north of Perth across to Tyndrum, Stirlingshire and south towards the main corridor between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Over the Higher ground around Harthill, thick frost covered the ground under crystal clear, beautiful skies. My temperature here at the house fell to 28 degrees, whilst even at 9pm last night Bathgate, West Lothian was already cold enough for frost to be forming on cars... This morning the truck thermometer was registering around 1 or 0C, 32 or 34 degrees, but once back in Bathgate, the temperature dropped to -1C or 30 degrees! Here at my house, with little wind and again, crystal clear skies, the temperature even at 9.30am was still 32 degrees or freezing!

I believe Tyndrum, Stirlingshire, which reported a September reading down to 24 degrees or -4.4C, apparently dropped to -5C this morning or 23 degrees, which is the coldest of the season so far. Other spots within the Central Belt which were less windy than further north likely saw 25 degrees in sheltered, interior locales perhaps between Livingston, West Lothian and Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, this stretch is relatively high up and some sheltered areas may have seen temperatures near the value recorded at Tyndrum this morning, just no thermometer to record!

Some of our drivers, reported snow showers at Airdrie last night!

This earlt season Arctic blast will soon dissapear with allow milder air to return, as early as tomorrow!
