southern plains
Today will likely become the hottest day of 2010 so far as high pressure builds from the Lower Mississippi valley westward, dominating Mississippi to west-central Texas, 100s likely will stretch from the north Houston suburbs to southern Kansas today under brilliantly sunny skies. I am looking for highs to push or even surpass 105 degrees today in portions of east-central Texas. Dallas may top out this afternoon at around 103, Houston 98 and in between I'm looking for a 105. Tomorrow may be even warmer! As for areas surrounding Houston down to Galveston, look for the hottest surface temperatures to be where there has been less rainfall recently. Areas north of Downtown Houston will likely see 4-6 degrees higher than south of the Houston. Whilst Houston will likely aim for 98 or 99, it will likely be muggier close to the 88-degree waters along Galveston beach where air temps will push 94-95 but dew points that are in the middle 70s will make it feel over 110. Brownsville will top 95, San Antonio 98, Lubbock 95 and Amarillo will top near 98. Oklahoma City will likely warm to around 101-102. Tonight look for lows dropping to the mid-70s in most places, nearer 80 along the muggier coast.
southeast & florida
Another very hot day and very hot and humid the further south and closer to the Gulf or Atlantic waters you go today! The heat will be peeled back slightly in eastern areas of the region from say Alabama into Georgia and south into Florida. This is because the high pressure cell providing such stable, sunny and very hot weather has shifted slightly west, meaning a 2-4 degree drop over Alabama, Georgia, Florida and up into the Carolinas, whilst a rise of 2-4 or more degrees for Mississippi, Louisiana into all of Texas where the worst air temperatures will be seen. A frontal boundary is drapped over north Georgia, Alabama, helping lower highs and increase a thunderstorm chance for places like Atlanta & Charlotte where highs may top around 93-95, humidity levels will also be relatively low (60s), therefore, though it may feel close to 100, it's not going to feel like south Alabama and Georgia which will endure mid-90s and mid-70 degree dew points, making it feel like 110 or higher. Where it's going to be downright dangerous this afternoon and basically by noon will be Birmingham, Alabama, Jackson, down to Biloxi, Mississippi, New Orleans, Louisiana north and west where highs will run between 96-101, dew points in the 70s will make even downtown New Orleans feel possibily close to 115. Near the super warm Gulf and bay and inlet waters where upper 70-degree dew points bubble in mid-90s, it may make spots like Biloxi, MS, Bootheville, LA and other steamy, swampy places feel more like 120 in spots! Lows tonight range from the mid-70s across the board to low 80s near the coast. Bootheville and Venice, LA may stay as warm as 85 for the low! Across Florida there will be a chance of sea breezes storms this afternoon, particularly central and south Florida, whilst drier, hotter air will keep upper 90s to around 102 degree temps in north Florida where the atmosphere is more capped.. Lows tonight range from mid-70s inland to 80-85 along the coast!
northern plains
A relatively quiet day for the Northern Plains and Midwest with sunshine and highs in the low 90s for the Dakotas, 86 and sun for Minneapolis, 84 for Chicago. 90-94 from Kansas City to St Louis. Lows will be genrally in the 60s in the Dakotas and down into Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Urban areas will likely remain above 70.
northeast & mid-atlantic
An absolutely perfect day for the beach or even a day to spend doing some yardwork across the entire Northeast as humidity is comfortable and so too are the temperatures. You couldn't ask for better for the final day of July 2010, particularily after the heat and humidity seen in this region of the country. Look for abundant sunshine wherever you are today. High will top 85 in Washington DC, 84 in Baltimore and Philadelphia, 82 in New York and a perfect 78 in Boston. If your heading for the Jersey to Lond Island beaches, look for 70s with a cooling breeze, Further north, you may actually feel a slight chill along the beaches of Rhode Island, Massachussetts, New Hampshire and Maine where it may stay in the upper 60s! .. Lows tonight will fall to the refreshing 60s, even downtown areas of the big cities. Widespread 50s, yes 50s for surrounding rural areas. Are we looking for 40s and even 30s across the mountain valleys of New England? YES! Thank a nice, dry Canadian origin high!
northwest
Refreshing at the coast (highs in the 60s with morniong fog) mid-70s for Seattle, low 80s for Portland, 60s in the mountains with a chance of an isolated light shower, hot for areas east of the mtns where highs are likely to yet again push into the mid-90s to near 100! Further south and east, Boise will enjoy a hot afternono with a high around 98, Salt Lake a sunny and hot 91 whilst a chance of a monsoonal storm will spoil the show in Denver with a high around 89. Montana will see 80s to mid-90s with Billings aiming for 94. Lows tonight will see widespread 50s with 30s and 40s in the mountains, 50s and 60s in valleys of the entire region.
southwest
The marine layer has thickened somewhat again today as a trough weakens the ridge somewhat over the Four Corners, this will aid in bringing low stratus and fog onshore this morning but will burn off bringing highs towards the 70-degree mark along the S. Calif beaches, upper 60s for central and northern Calif beaches. Downtown San Diego and LA should see burn off times around 10-11am, eastern suburbs earlier than that. San Francisco may see burn off restricted to early or mid-afternoon. Look for highs in San Diego and LA of 76 degrees, 70 for San Francisco. Coastal Valleys and canyons should warm to around 85-90, low 90s for Riverside. The Central Valley should warm to the mid-90s today. As for the deserts, Death Valley will as always be the hot spot with a high around 118-119 like has been the case of late, around 103-105 in Palm Springs, Baker and Las Vegas, 100 for Barstow. Phoenix may see a higher t-storm chance today and therefore it may actually fail to top 100, perhaps only to 98-99. However if skies remains fairly clear despite high dew points, it may top into the low 100s. Lows tonight range from the 50s at the beach, 60s for the downtowns and coastal valleys and canyons, 70s for the desert, mid-80s for Vegas and Phoenix.

The current low, now over west M.P./Gujarat at 998 mb, is maintaining its precipitation strenght. With Good rainfall along its path, and good capacity to attract cloud mass from the Arabian Sea, it has generously drenched Central India, Maharashtra coast, and many pockets of Gujarat too.

A vortex (see map) in the north Arabian sea has suddenly increased precipitation along the north maharashtra coast (MUmbai) on Friday.Vortex expected to merge with the incoming system.

Keeping up the trend, like the previous low, this system should wipe out the "red" region totally.

Well, as a reader has asked,, could it now track SW ? Difficult ! My estimate is that a weakening system should move, along the axis, west-northwest, into Rajasthan. Precipitation will also shift from M.P. to Konkan,Gujarat and South Rajasthan from Saturday. At this rate, Konkan and Gujarat should be piling up in surplus.

More Rains for this weekend (Saturday thru Monday) in South Rajasthan, Gujarat, especially coastal Gujarat and Konkan getting very heavy falls on Sunday (upto 150 mms in pockets) in 24 hrs,and then the wet patch rolling into Sindh coast from Tuesday.

What next for the week ?? See a system on the east coast of Thailand ! Take your binocs and lets watch out for a pulse emerging from it in the bay ! Taking a clue from this forecast map of 6th. Aug from "Weather Zone"

Standing out prominently is the rainfall at Dehra Dun. 364 mms in 24 hrs eneded Saturday morning. Another noteworthy reading, Bareilly, 75 mms. Reason: Yesterday, another cyclonic circulation extending upto 3.1 kms a.s.l. was over west Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Uttarakhand. Interacting with western disturbance as an UAC in the same altitude, there was an instant formation of high clouds (rain bearing) in the region, as a cold front was locally created.

Mumbai: With the help of a 3 hour drenching on Saturday morning, Mumbai Colaba season's total has overshot the 2000 mms mark, and stands at 2046 mms as on Saturday morning. The 3 hour downpour overshot my forecast of 30 mms for saturday by 24 mms.

Saturday and Sunday will also be wet, as per the analysis above. Would not hesitate to expect 150 mms Saturday thru Sunday.

Very frequent rains during daytime Some extremely heavy falls could flood low areas. Rain intensity tapering a bit by sunday evening.

Monday:expect frequent showers to continue, but with 40 mms of rain that day.

And not a soul is going to crib in Mumbai ! The combined lakes are now at a storage level of 6.7 lmlitres, against a full capacity of 13 lmlitres. 51.5 % full up.

your america today forecast
by mark vogan

southeast & florida
A very strong Bermuda high dominates the Southeast and thunderstorms today will be limited to the Gulf Coast in an isolated fashion as well as across Florida, while the interior Southeast will have a blistering hot day on tap with only some puffy fair weather clouds floating overhead. Dew points will be tolerable over the north of Alabama and Georgia with low to perhaps mid-70s, this will make it feel between 100-105 degrees for cities such as Montgomery, Atlanta, Charlotte, whilst areas farther west and south will see not only higher dew points but also higher air temperatures with central and interior southern areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida into the Carolina coastal plain, dew points may stay in the drippy mid 70s with coastal cities seeing upper 70s to around 80 in a few spots. Air temperatures across these central and southern locales may be set to push the 100-degree mark, therefore meaning a dangerous heat index of 108 to 110+ will make for the nessesary precautions and basically a need for staying indoors. Some locations of these states may see over 115 degree + heat indexes... very very dangerous indeed. Florida and sections of the Gulf Coast as far west as New Orleans, may see a "stray or isolated storm" but it's more likely to remain very hot, humid and sunny. Lows tonight will only fall to the upper 70s in most places. We're looking for a high of 96 in Atlanta, GA, low 77 (HI of 100-105), Montgomery, AL 98, Low 77 (HI of 105+), New Orleans, LA 94, Lo 80 (HI of 110+), Tallahassee, FL 99, Low 80 (HI of 110+), Columbus, GA 100, Low 79 (HI of 110+) Ocala, FL 100, Low 80 (HI of 108+), Orlando, FL 98, Low 79 (HI of 106+), Miami, FL 93, Low 82 (HI of 107).  REMEMBER THROUGHOUT CENTRAL FLORIDA AND EVEN THE COASTAL AREAS, THUNDERSTORMS ARE LIKELY TO POP UP IN AREAS AS THE SEA BREEZES CONVERGENCE THIS AFTERNOON!
northeast & mid-atlantic
Relief is here and for several days before things begin to turn once again. Today will be sunny, with dew points in the 40s across New England, including Boston and 50s for all other areas. That means a high of 85 in DC, Baltimore and New York will feel nice and comfortable, 70s to around 80 in New England, simply divine! Lows tonight will cool off to the 60s for pretty much all the major cities, perhaps low to mid-50s for the cooler more rural areas outside the urban heat island, that drier air helping release the heat after sunset and making it much much easier for sleeping at night, open those windows and allow that cool breeze whisk in tonight!
southern plains
THE HEAT IS ON as high pressure begins to build as the upper low is out of the game, I expect highs will build to over 100 degrees for most areas from Houston to Wichita with 105s showing up across central Texas and Oklahoma. Today will be very hot and humid (more so for the southern region). Houston should warm to 95 today, feeling closer to 105+ and tonight the low will only drop to near 80. Dallas, your looking for 99 for the high today, feeling more like 105 and tonight you'll cool to a low near 78, OK City your heading for a high around 99 also with a realfeel close to that number and a low down to 78. It will be slightly cooler in the north-south from Lubbock to Amarillo corridor where thunderstorms may pop-up in an isolated fashioned in between, more of a storm chance further west as you head out towards El Paso. Highs through western Texas will be limited to only the upper 80s! Mid-90s for the south-central interior including San Antonio.
northern plains
The Northern tier will have a west-east split. The Dakotas will enjoy hot sun and 90s whilst further east into Minnesota and Iowa on south and east, there is a chance of thunderstorm developing and highs limited to the 70s, low 80s. Forecasting a high of 92, Low 56 in Minot, ND, a high of 77, Low 65 for Minneapolis, 77, Low 60 but dry for Chicago, 79 high, low 59 for Detroit. Areas to the south will see warmer, juicer air with a high of 88-91 from Kansas City to St Louis, Lows falling to around 74.
northwest
It's a typical summer start along the coast of Washington and Oregon with 50s and fog to start from the coast to I-95 urban corridor. By mid morning, clearing should commence and complete the cycle by noon or 1pm all the way to the coast where even the beaches will see sunshine, cooling breezes and highs in the 60s, Across the Olympics and the sun will be shinning with highs will warm to 75 in Seattle, whilst Portland will warm to a typical 4-6 degrees higher than it's northern neightbour with an 80 degree high likely there. The Cascade mountains will enjoy mostly sunshine but a few very isolated storms may pop, highs will be in the 50s and 60s. East of the Cascades it will be warm with highs genrally in the 80s to low 90s! For the Great Basin and Rockies, expect showers and some strong thunderstorms developing in the heating of the day over the ridges, some which may spread into surrounding valleys and basins. Highs will be hot with 90s across most low lying areas including both Denver and Salt Lake which may see a 30% storm chance this afternoon. Low 90s across many areas of Montana including a 93 in Billings. Boise may top around 100 with a chance of a storm. Lows tonight will be 50s along the coast and urab I-5 corridor, 30s and 40s in the mtns and 50s and 60s in the interior.
southwest
Today will be a day which commences mostly clear, even close to the coast with a weak marine layer influence and temps starting in the 50s to around 60 from the beach to downtown San Diego, LA and up to San Francisco. It will warm to around 70 at the beaches, 75 for Downtown San Diego, 78 for LA, 72 for San Francisco. Coastal Valleys and canyons will likely top around 85-90 whilst the deserts will heat further to beyond 100. Palm Springs may top near 107, Barstow 106, Baker, 108, Las Vegas 107, Phoenix lower with 104 as moisture levels in the low to mid-levels is higher and therefore thunderstorm development is fairly high. We may see some thunderstorm activity as far west of the San Bernardino, San Gabriel Mountains this afternoon as well as interior mountains but it's more likely to remain sunny and seasonably hot over the valleys and basins. The only area expected to possibly see thunderstorms drop in off the mtns would be around the Four Corners, Phoenix and all the way up the Rocky Mountain chain! Lows tonight as always will fall to the upper 50s at the beaches, around 60 for the big city downtowns and coastal valleys and canyons and 70s in the desert.

The Northeast and Middle Atlantic States Blast-Furnace and Sauna of July 2010

WAS NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE THE HEAT CAPITOL OF THE NORTHEAST? MORE 90S THAN DC, BALTIMORE, PHILLY AND NEW YORK, ONLY 1-DEGREE OFF WASHINGTON'S HOTTEST TEMPERATURE...

It's amazing to think that only last July, New York couldn't buy a 90-degree day for love or money, this July, it's almost the complete opposite with seemingly day after day of fiercely hot air and deeply tropical humidity which sucks all your body's vital moisture straight to the surface of the skin as soon as you step outside to what feels like hades as the heat blasts off Manhattan sidewalks and radiates off everything from surrounding buildings to vehicles traversing the overcrowded streets to even traffic signals, AC's running day and night, have meant a struggle and strain on an aging power grid and some neighbourhoods across particularly the New York, Jersey and Long Island area where power have flickered on and off in a loosing battle with the heat. As for the humidity, well it simply makes a sweltering hot July, unbearable for many or most and an air mass that is equivalent to the equatorial rainforests of Brazil. Ever been to Singapore? Along Saudi Arabia's coastal areas? Well if you've visited New York, Washington, Philadelphia and at times Boston, you'll have experienced the American equivalent to these truely tropical places this summer.

During a period within the first 10 days of July, we saw an extraordinarily warm and humid air mass build over the Carolinas and Virginia, through a 24, 36 to 48 hour period, we saw highs rise into the 100s, for New York down to Philly, this was the first occurance since August 9, 2001. We saw 4-straight days top 100 at Newark, NJ, tying the all-time record for longest 100 degree streaks. Washington saw 102 degrees whilst Baltimore, MD saw a high of 105 degrees, the hottest in 27 years! Philly warmed twice, like Central Park, New York to over 100 degrees with a peak high at both sites of 103 degrees... Night upon night struggled to cool below 90 degrees by midnight, the humidity simply harnessing the days heat within a skillet-like environment of these large I-95 population center's. Even Boston saw a high of 100 degrees at Logan International Airport and lows fall to only 77 degrees.

By the close of July came another heatwave, with many days in between warming into the low to mid-90s with upper 60s to generally mid-70 degree dew points that pushed real feels into the low 100s.

Heat Wave two of July, 2010 saw yet more remarkable heat including the highst heat indexes of summer with 111 degrees being reached within Washington DC, Over 112 degrees in Baltimore, 106-110 degrees in Philly and near 110 degrees in New York. Lows once again failed in spots to get below 80 degrees for the morning low with Philadelphia finally recording it's hottest low ever with 83 degrees, likewise for Atlantic City. Richmond and Norfolk, VA saw two straight afternoon warm to an incredible 105 degrees. For Norfolk this also matched their all-time record on two days in a row...

Why has it been so unrelentlessly hot and so very uncomfortably, stinkingly humid from Washington DC to New York, even up to southern New England including Boston?

1) A very dry spring lead to near drought conditions for many areas across the region.

2) The intensity during winter and now collapse of the El Nino?

3) The warmth of the Atlantic offshore of the Eastern Seaboard?

4) The warm phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and abnormal warmth of SST's surrounding the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, forcing higher humidity levels.

Perhaps the power of the El Nino (strongest since 97-98) helped jack-up sub-tropical high pressure systems this summer as Europe has been abnormally warm as well as the Eastern US and across parts of Asia.

How many 90 and 100 degree days across the Northeast in July 2010?

Washington DC saw 21 days above 90 degrees, 3 days above 100 degrees. The hottest day was 102 degrees. The site saw 3 nights that remained above 80 degrees with the warmest such night seeing a low of 81 degrees.

Baltimore, Maryland saw 21 days above 90 degrees, an near unprecidented 6 days at or above 100 degrees with the hottest day topping 105 degrees (WARMEST IN 27 YEARS), 4 nights remained above 80 for the low with the warmest being 85 degrees.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania saw 19 days above 90 degrees and 2 days consecutively above 100 degrees. The hottest day saw a high of 103 degrees. The city also endured 2 nights which remained above 80 with the warmest low being 83 degrees, breaking the old all-time warmest low which was 82 set back during the last time Philly topped 100 which was August, 2001.

Atlantic City, New Jersey which has it's official station several miles inland from the Atlantic and warms usually 5-10 degrees higher than the boardwalk. The site at the airport registered 14 days above 90 degrees and 1 day over 100 with the highest reading being 102 degrees. The warmest low saw the warmest ever on record with a minimum temperature of 83 degrees, like Philly, breaking the all-time warmest low which was 82 set back in August 2001.

Newark, New Jersey, typically one of the hottest sites within the New York area endured a gruelling 21 days over 90 degrees and an all-time record tying streak of 4 consecutive days reaching 100 degrees or higher, the warmest being 103 degrees. Newark also saw 3 nights which failed to drop below 80 degrees with the warmest low being 82 degrees with upper 90s still being registered as late as 9pm and 94 degrees as late as 10.30pm. Amazingly, during the hottest day of July 2010 here, this site saw a temperature as high as 95 degrees as early as 9am and incredibly 100 degrees by 10am, it looked as though it was on target to record it's hottest ever temperature that day. The old high is 105 set back in August, 2001 and some sources were reading Newark at 105 at one point, this was later deemed inaccurate and the official high for the day was apparently 103 degrees.

Central Park in Midtown Manhattan, New York City is often a cool site compared with Newark, New Jersey to the southwest and LaGuardia to the east in Queens but it's been a hot one here with 16 days reaching at least 90 degrees an an impressive 2 straight days reaching 100 degrees with the hottest topping 103 degrees, just 3 degrees off the all-time record. Amazingly 3 nights within Central Park remained above 80 degree with the warmest low being 81 degrees.

NEW ENGLAND SAW LITTLE RELIEF EITHER AS 100s SPREAD UP INTO NEW HAMPSHIRE

Up into Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachussetts there was astonishing heat also to be found with Hartford, Connecticut registering a high of 102 degrees and a low of 75 degrees, Providence, Rhode Island also recorded a blistering 102 degrees with minimal relief at night where the warmest low stopped at 75 degrees. In Massachussetts, Boston touched 100 degrees by early afternoon, only to cool substantially throughout the afternoon as a prominant east wind kicked in off the Atlantic bringing late afternoon readings at Logan Airport down into the 80s, little relief was had at night with a low merely falling to a still sticky 77 degrees, remaining in the 80s throughout the overnight hours. To the west, it was even hotter with Westfield, Mass (west of Springfield) recording an impressive 103 degree high and a low of 74 degrees.

ISLANDS OFF THE NEW ENGLAND COAST ALSO GOT UNUSUALLY HOT

You'd think islands out in waters in the very pleasant 60s would stay nice and refreshingly cool, NO!

Those who would do anything to escape the torrid summer heat perhaps headed to the offshore cooling spots such as the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard off Massachussetts... On the hottest day, even on Martha's Vineyard there was little relief with a high of 95 degrees, and a low which barely cooled to only 75 degrees. Nantucket Island wasn't much better with a high reaching 91 degrees, low of 70 degrees. Block Island off Rhode Island wasn't much cooler than on the Phode Island mainland as the high there peaked at a hot 95 degrees and a low which barely fell overnight, falling to an uncomfortable 73 degrees.

So, if you can't escape the blowtorch of the Middle Atlantic states up in southern New England or even on the offshore islands, surely northern New England will be cooler? Unfortunately no, not even New Hampshire was cool. In fact it was a mere 1-degree cooler in Nashua in southern New Hampshire as it was in the Nations Capitol. The high topped a stunning 101 degrees and 100 on two straight days! The city also endured a night were the low only bottomed out at 74 degrees. What amazed me about the heat of Nashua was that it astonishingly saw MORE 90-degree days than in DC, Baltimore, Philly and New York... 22 days this July, Nashua topped at least 90 degrees on 22 days and id be sure that must be by far the warmest ever July in this city!

Concord, NH saw a maximum high of 99 degrees with a warm low of 72 degrees.

The well known "coldspots of New England" also endured hot temps with Berlin, NH topping a high of 94 degrees and a night which only fell to 66 degrees.

Even atop of Mt Washington, over 6,000ft above sea level it warmed to 69 degrees, only 3 degrees shy of the warmest ever reading at the top.

In Maine highs also warmed into the unusual mid to upper 90-degree territory with Fryeburg reaching 96 degrees and only falling to 71 degrees. Presque Isle is not known for summer heat, especially when you think this site recorded several consecutive days in January 2009 below -45F. It warmed to 91 degrees here and a low fell to a very warm 70 degrees.

southeast & florida
Hot, humid and haxy is the name of the game and day by day normality for the Southeast but it certainly seems more so this year with a seemingly endless streak of low to mid-90s across most areas of the Southeast, particularly to the north of I-10... Today shall be no exception with showers and storms minimal through the daytime or heating of the mid-afternoon period, but it may be 3-6pm before some thunderstorms begin developing and their trigger will be mostly a frontal boundary to the north as well as the typical daytime heating, juicy humidity combo. A strong ridge is holding thunderstorm development at bay for longer as temps are warmer aloft and therefore a weak "cap" is in place, however a push of a front will break the cap slightly, allowing thunderstorms to pop, here and there "late this afternoon" and may on and off fire through tonight, becoming a little more widspread through the overnight. I expect highs to top around 95 in New Orleans, LA (DP mid-70s, HI of 105+), Low 79, Atlanta, GA 95 (DP 72-73, HI 100), Low 76, Charlotte, NC 98 (DP low to mid-70s, HI 104-108), Low 78, Jacksonville, FL 97 (DP low 70s, HI 102-106), Low 76, Miami, FL 92 (DP 75-78, HI 108+), Low 80.
northeast & mid-atlantic
Today marks change in the overall pattern across the Northeast with cooler and much drier air knocking on the northwest doorstep... Good news? I bet it is, especially if you step outside this morning to mid-70-degree air  in areas where it's raining and you think it's inviting, only to discover low to mid-70 degree dew points as far north as Boston.. The air is very juicy, sweaty, steamy, whatever you want call it, but hey, your use to it by now aren't you?
Today will see warmth build towards a uniform 90 in all of the big cities from DC to Boston. Thunderstorms are expected to blossom, particularly later in the afternoon as a front pushes out of the UP of Michigan and will arrive along the Eastern Seaboard by evening enhancing shower and thunderstorm activity throughout the region, clearing out the high heat and humidity. This should bring much more comfortable conditions across the entire region by tomorrow. Lows will return to the 60s tonight for Boston, 40s and 50s for rural areas of Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine down to Connecticut southwards. Boston may be fortunate to drop into the upper 60s, whilst low 70s are likely for New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and DC.
southern plains
Building HEAT for the Southern Plains as the Upper-Low that enhanced and persisted the thunderstorm acivity of late across Texas and Oklahoma shifts west into New Mexico, this will help build pressures and the temperatures on the ground across the board with highs right along the Galveston beach to 90, in Houston as high as 95 and with this heat comes the classic humidity in the low to middle 70s, perhaps close to 80 on those beaches along the coast, this 90 degree + heat and 70 degree + humidity will make it feel very hot and unplesant to be outside in today, feeling like 110+ on the beach with the highest levels of humidity in the region, 102-106 in Greater Houston. Further north, actual temperatures will in hotter than further south but humidity will be slightly lower. So, though Dallas will warm to a hot 96 even 97, it's going to feel more like 102.. likely lower than in Houston.. Areas further west in Texas will be cooler and less hot feeling with the influence of the upper low.. Highs may struggle to get out of the 80s from Lubbock to the panhandle of TX and OK, even further west for areas like El Paso and up into New Mexico, thunderstorms will be likely across the area, expecially once the daytime heating kicks in, look for highs generally in the 84-87 degree range, including El Paso. Lows tonight should drop to near 70 across western and far western Texas, mid-70s for central Texas from San Antonio to Amarillo and 76-80 from Dallas to Houston, I expect as usual a low around 80-82 at Galveston.
southwest
A slightly warmer day for the deserts with a high around 104 to 105 for both Las Vegas and Phoenix as well as Palm Springs and Baker, whilst Barstow, like yesterday is calling for a high near 102. As for areas towards the coast. I'm calling for upper 80s for Riverside and the Inland Empire as well as San Bernardino's cities of Ontario and Pasadena, near 76 at the Civic Center in Downtown Los Angeles, whilst the beaches should warm to around 70 after morning cloud and fog as per usual this time of year. LA should see a burn off around 10am but a brisk Pacific breeze will hold temps at bay. Lows will fall to the pleasant 50s at the beaches from Oceanside all the way up the California coast, 60s for both LA and San Francisco downtowns and surrounding surburbs as well as the East Bay and coastal valleys and canyons of LA, Orange, Riverside counties. 68-75 for the high desert, mid to upper 70s for the low desert and mid-80s for Las Vegas and Phoenix. Death Valley should warm to around 118, low dropping off to around 88.
northwest
A slight cooldown from recent days for the I-5 corridor but skies will remain gloriously sunny and warm with highs around 78 in Seattle and 92 in Portland this afternoon. Expect 60s and 70s for the Cascades as well as the Olympic mountains. To the east of the Cascades, highs once again will be equally as hot as recent days with 90s and 100s likely. Billings may warm to a hot 94 whilst most areas of Montana's low country will push the mid to upper 90s, higher elevations a cooler, more comfortable 70s and 80s. Lows will range from the 50s in the I-95 corridor, indlucing downtown Seattle and Portland, 30s and 40s for all mountain areas and 60s to perhaps some urban 70s east of the Cascades.
northern plains
An overall gorious, sunny late July day is in store for the Northern tier from Williston, ND all the way down to Kansas City and St Louis in the central Plains, humidity will be very pleasant in the low category as a high pressure cell from Canada is in control bringing highs in the 80s across most areas from NW North Dakota to Chicago, the heat and higher humidity will be confined to the I-70 corridor where a high around 90 will be had in Kansas City and St Louis. Minneapolis will enjoy abundant sun and an 86 degree high, Chicago 84 and Detroit 81. Far NW North Dakota may see an afternoon storm develop with higher temps, highs may push 90 from eastern MT into Williston and Minot.

"The low pressure area over northwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal off south Orissa and north Andhra Pradesh coasts now lies over north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Orissa and south Chhattisgarh. It is likely to move west-northwestwards" - IMD bulletin for Thursday evening.

The low, well marked by now, is at 994 mb. enough to give meaningfull rains along its track. It can deepen a bit more on Friday, before starting its inward journey .

With the movement of the system ,rains could be expected along the path, that is thru North A.P, Orissa, Chattsigarh from Thursday evening and moving into Maharashtra and M.P from Friday. I see concentrated heavy rains in M.P. and Northern Maharashtra regions on Saturday.

Not venturing yet to forecast beyond this point today ! :)

Strong south-westerlies are hitting across into the Goa,Karnataka and Kerala coasts since yesterday.Coastal stations in Karnataka have received very heavy rains.Kammardi (Chickmagalur dt.) 170 mms, Kollur (Udupi dt.) and Bhadrachalam 160 mms each, Agumbe 150 mms, Mudibidre (Dakshina Kannada dt.) 140 mms, Shirali 107 mms, Honavar 80 mms. And in Goa, anguem-150, Margao-130, Gaganbawda, Canacona-110each, Pernem, Ponda, Valpoi, Dabolim, Mormugao-100 each, Panjim -90.

As anticipated, now with the weekly monsoon report (as on 28th July), we see the previously "Red" regions in the central states have turned to a favourable "green"

The deficit now drastically reduced to-5%.

Our poll results should end here now, with -5% as the final result. With .37.% voting for this number, we see it in the 1st position as the most voted .

Mumbai, lull (in rains) period seems to be over ! Increase in rains, as the low has crossed the coast in the east. Gradual increase now till the weekend. I see very heavy rains culminating on Sunday/Monday as the system moves in closer to Mumbai.

Trying an experimental detailed Mumbai Forecast:

Friday will be occasionally wet with moderately heavy showers, some prolonged and mostly in the pre noon peroid, about 30 mms.

Saturday will be cloudy, with showers in the afternoon time. Evening may see an odd shower. Rain 25 mms.

But Sunday rains will increase to 35 mms, and peak on Monday, with heavy rains during the daytime, to around 60-75 mms.

(Forecast valid/subject to change if system deviates from expected/estimated lines).

Mumbai Colaba received 59 mms in the 12 hrs till 8.30 pm on Thursday, and S'Cruz 29 mms in the same time gap.

Was a bit taken aback and surprised when i heard thunder around 3.30 pm today in south Mumbai. Was i imagining it, or was it some other urban city noise? Please confirm if anyone had heard thundering ? Recorders of "thunder in Mumbai" please clarify ?

southeast & florida
Due to a westward push of an upper-level, the same one that tore apart Bonnie, this will mean a descrease in moisture and indeed the chance of thunderstorms for areas east of Lake Charles, LA to Pensacola, Fla, points to the north should also remain mostly sunny and hot as the upper low moves out and the westward advance of the Bermuda high will help push readings to perhaps the highest levels of the year so far for New Orleans where I'm looking for a high this afternoon of 95 degrees. From Memphis to Atlanta, into the Carolinas and well as southbound into Florida, highs will be hot with low to mid-90s covering much of the Southeast with Atlanta likely topping near 94 with a low overnight down to a mere 76. Charlotte should warm towards 93 with a low around 75. As for the Sunshine State, we're looking for a very hot day with highs pushing towards 100 in Jacksonville, Orlando 97, Tampa 96 and even down in Miami it will likely eye 94. Humidity from Lake Charles to New Orleans to Pensacola will likely be in the mid to upper 70s, combine this with mid to upper 90s and it's going to feel dangerously hot, close to 110 or even slightly higher in some spots... Lows tonight in Florida will drop to the mid-70s inland, near 80 to even 81 at the beaches. Thunderstorms are likely for most areas across the region except for the area from Lake Charles, LA to Birmingham to Pensacola.
northeast & mid-atlantic
OK, folks... you know the drill by now right? Yes, you've guessed it. Hot, hazy and humid with 90s across the entire I-95 corridor today under strong sunshine. Even up in Boston, you guys will warm to I think 93 degrees today with NO natural Atlantic AC for the city with the exceptions of the immediate beaches, Long Island beaches may to be the place to go if your within the New York area where a high will top around 92 degrees, Long Island mid-80s and perhaps 82-84 degrees for the beaches from Coney Island to Montauk, L.I. Jersey will see inland low to mid-90s, mid-80s along the Jersey Shore and yes, whilst inland towards Trenton and Philly, it's going to be another scorcher if your walking around Center City in your business suit and looking for the nearest place to have lunch. Look for a high around 93 degrees and an even more uncomfortable 95 for both Baltimore and DC, nearer 90 along the Chesapeake Bay, less cooling there than you'd expect thanks to water temps in the upper 80s and of course the warmth off the DELMARVA which shelters true cooling from the open Atlantic Ocean. Lows tonight will fall to the upper 60s across rural areas, mid to upper 70s for the cities.
northwest
Yet again the residents from Seattle-Portland to Spokane, WA will enjoy abundant sunshine and midsummer warmth with highs along the urban corridor of SEA to PORT warming to 80 and 86 respectively, 60s and 70s throughout the Cascades and 80s, 90s and even the odd 100 for areas across the interior! Lows range from the 50s at the beaches as well as I-95 corridor, 30s and 40s across the mtns and 50s and 60s east of the mtns.
southwest
The slightly cooler weather map will once again continue today with a slightly shallower marine layer, meaning a faster burnoff of morning clouds and fog back to the coast and an ever so slight creep up in temps though overall temps will be uniformly below normal by a few degrees once again like yesterday and previous days. Expect highs around 70 at the along the S. Cal beaches, 75 across the LA Basin whilst mid-60s along the Northern Calif beaches, 70 for Downtown San Francisco, 80 for SFO. Most high desert communities such as Lancaster and Palmdale in the Antelope valley, Victorville in the Apple Valley into the mid to even upper 90s today, whilst Barstow may warm to around 100, that's quite nice for this time of year. As for coastal valleys and Inland Empire as well as the inland Bay Area highs will warm under plenty of sunshine to between 90-94 degrees, upper 90s for the Sacramento and San Joaquin valley communities. The hottest places as always will be in the low desert where highs should top around 100-105 for Palm Springs, Las Vegas to Phoenix AREAS INCLUDING LAS VEGAS MAY SEE THUNDERSTORMS TODAY AS WELL AS MANY MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES... Lows will be in the 50s along the coast and LA basin as well as across San Francisco, 60s for coastal valleys and canyons where fog penetrates inland areas, exposed to the marine flow, 70s for the deserts and mid to upper 80s for the major cities of Las Vegas and Phoenix.
northern plains
After the hot, humid, stormy day from Williston, ND to Rochester, MN yesterday, behind the front, today will be cooler, much less humid and there will be abundant sunshine. Meanwhile the front will be positioned further south and east today and shall effect areas from Kansas City to St Louis on to Chicago and Detroit today where highs should warm towards 86-90 (Low to mid-90s for KS and SL) with muggy air flowing north and will help fire thunderstormsalong the front which calmed down during the overnight and will resume fire with today's heating, some storms, like yesterday, will turn severe. Look for a high of 82-84 for the Dakotas and Minnesota with a high around 83 for Minneapolis with lows falling into the pleasant low 60s. This combined with calm skies will make for ideal sleeping.
southern plains
The Bonnie-destroyer! The Upper-Low will once again the tropical donwpour impules that have been persistently the rule across Texas, pulling heat and copious amounts of moisture.. Add in some heat to between 88-92 with dew points in the low to mid-70s and BANG storms pop-up day after day with the upper low the battery of energy... Expect showers and storms through Texas and up into Oklahoma today with highs uniformly in the 90-94 degree range and a tropical feel to the air. Tonight lows will drop off to the upper 60s across west Texas and Oklahoma, mid 70s over the central region and upper 70s from Oklahoma City to Houston (generally between 76-78), around 80 along the Gulf coast.

THE RUSSIAN HEAT CONTRIBUTOR, THE BIG TROUGH!

As mentioned in yesterday's Weather Talk, the heat that's been blistering areas more known for extreme cold, wouldn't be so hot if it weren't for the drought conditions that settled in during the late winter as wellas the the intensity of the high that became strong and sprawled out across much of the European continental, then the major key for Moscow! A strong trough swung in off the North Atlantic which nudged the massive, hot high east, the flow turned southwest and south as the trough and high interacted and forced hot, dry air into Moscow bringing a series of unprecidented hot days which have entered the upper 90s and unusually warm nights have also contributed.

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Stage 1 of our estimate is surprisingly on schedule. Today, 28th. we see the formation of a 1002 mb low off the A.P./Orissa coast. Like I mentioned, this should now deepen, to at least 996 mb for a "major" effect along its path,( Whichever path it takes) and along the west coast. But contrary to my expectations, it is precariously close to the coast, and i feel it may not deepen much. Anyway, lets wait i see, i may be proved wrong. Also we see the winds picking up along the Kerala/Karnataka coast, rushing towards the nascent low. See map of accumalated rains). Hope my presentation is clear and precise this time ! :)

We see the monsoon axis, seasonal trough, running along the line joining the seasonal low in Sindh, thru a 1002 mb low embedded in the trough towards the new low in the bay. Hence, we could see some rains along this line next 2 days. The erstwhile low, having drenched Gujarat, has weakened into the sindh desert, and should dissipate by tomorrow. Rainfall along the sindh coast and interiors will decrease and diminish from Thursday evening, as the low dissipates.

Mumbai, utilise this lull till the new low deepens and crosses the coastline. (Maybe by Thursday night/Friday??)

northern plains
DANGEROUS WEATHER ALERT: as today will become hot, very humid and as this air broils a cold front will charge southeastwards and slam against mid-90 degree air across central and southern Minnesota by late this afternoon. It's very a very storm morning across particularly North Dakota with the Fargo area receiving nasty, bow echo thunderstorms this morning and these lines of storms have progressed across northern Minnesota. Lines will die away whilst new ones will form behind old, dying ones. That will be the case more for areas north of Minneapolis, though late morning storms may effect far northern suburbs. It's going to be between 3-4pm onwards that the risk is there for Minneapolis into southern Minnesota as well as Wisconsin, where the heating will continue to build whilst dew points push 75 degrees. This will set the stage for a major fuel injector for SE bound storms that may turn severe once they enter the Great Minneapolis-St Paul Metropolitan area. As for the rest of the N. Plains and into the Lower Midwest, storms will also effect areas further south across Kansas City to St Louis with juicy, hot air. Highs will likely push 94 in both urban centers. As for Chicago, you will likely enjoy sunny skies and no storm threat today, calling for a high around 92. The Dakotas will see highs push 90, whilst Fargo will be slightly cooler, perhaps 88 after those morning storms and wet ground. Minneapolis may top 95 degrees today if the storms don't arrive too early. Dew Points may actually push the UPPER 70s for a time! It's already 72 degrees for the DP in MSP. Lows tonight will only drop to the low to mid-70s for Minnesota down through Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa into Missouri.
WITH TODAY'S STORMS, DAMAGING WIND, LARGE HAIL, LIGHTENING AND EVEN THE POSSIBILITY OF A TORNADO IS THE THREAT FROM THESE STORMS.
southern plains
An upper-low continues to draw Gulf moisture onshore along the Louisiana and upper Texas coast, therefore allowing the development of showers and thunderstorms anywhere from Corpus Christi along the Mid-Texas coast all the way to Lake Charles, Louisiana, this will hold highs to near only the mid-80s with Houston likely going for a high of only 87 degrees as earlier showers or, more likely, the development of a thunderstorm will shut off the daytime heating process early. This will actually be the case across most of Texas where storms are possible and even up across Dallas, highs are going to be limited to around 90-91 degrees, out to the west, more sun but again, highs will be cooler than normal with only an 88 at Lubbock and even El Paso may fail to reach 90 degrees this afternoon, but it will be sunny. Where it will be hotter will be north of Dallas towards Oklahoma City where highs should push the mid to upper 90s today but even there, with all the juicy, tropical low to mid 70 degrees dew points, storms are possible to blow up. Lows tonight should drop back to the low and mid-70s.
northwest
Another glorious and sunny day from the I-5 urban corridor from Seattle down to Portland with highs pushing into the 80s, calling for a high around 83 in Seattle, 88 in Portland and a refreshing 60s but with cloud and fog lingering all day along the coast. Over the mountains there is a chance of some showers and thunderstorms popping up in the heat of the day as a flow pushes up from the south, this is courtesy of the monsoonal flow moving all the way from Arizona and the four corners. To the east of the mountains it will, like to the west over Seattle and Portland, it's going to be sunny but like it has been, darn hot with 90s widespread with areas, especially over the eastern side of WA and OR temps will enter the 100s.
Tonight lows drop to the 50s from the beaches to cities, 30s and 40s for the mtns and 60s to the east.
southwest
The monsoonal flow will continue to collide with daytime heating which in turn will fire mountains thunderstorms today throughout much of the Rocky Mountain states and across the Four Corners. High pressure over the Great Basin, continues to draw the tropical moisture north from the warm waters of the Baja. Many valley areas including Phoenix and Las Vegas will likely see mostly sunshine with perhaps only isolated showers and thunderstorms crossing into the valleys, it's more likely any storms that do get going as the thermals stir culus into towering cumulonimbus will be restricted to the higher elevations, leaving low elevations dry, sunny and with temps generally in the upper 90s to low 100s. The high has in fact weakened, keeping highs to 103 to 104 for Vegas and Phoenix as well as other known hot spots such as Palm Springs, Barstow and Baker. As for Los Angeles, highs may struggle to reach 73 with morning clouds and fog slow to burn and peel back to the Pacific, a 5-15 mph NW wind may also help keep temps down by this afternoon. Areas along the coast may find themselves cloudy and fogbound for a good portion of the day with highs only in the mid-60s all the way north to the Oregon border. Even Downtown San Francisco will likely stay in the upper 60s! Lows tonight in the 50s from beaches to downtown LA and San Francisco. Inland low 60s to 70s in the deserts.
southeast & florida
HOT, STORMY, STEAMY will be the three words to describe the Southeast weather map today with highs pushing the 90-degree mark in most places with isolated thunderstorms likely to blossom pretty much anywhere. Some spots will however see mostly sunny skies with a miss in thunderstorms but on the downside of this, those missing the storms likely likely see higher temperatures and combine with high dew points in the mid-70s, it's going to feel above 100 degrees again... Though there will still be a storm threat across Florida, more so for central and northern Florida, drier air is pushing in from the west and this will help reduce storm chances a little from normal and also help rise highs to the mid to even upper 90s fror north Fla, to low 90s for south Fla. Atlanta shoudl see a 30-40% chance of an afternoon storm with a high around 92, low tonight 77, New Orleans 89, Low 80, Charlotte 88, low 75, Jacksonville 97, Low 80, Orlando 94, Low 75, Miami 91, Low 81.
northeast & mid-atlantic
Unfortunately the heavenly 80s of yesterday as far south as DC with magical dew points in the very comfortable 50s is gone as sunshine will rule, dew points will creep back to the 60s and highs today will creep back into the low 90s from Washington DC to New York with even Boston warming up towards 88. Tonight instead of downtown lows in the 60s for Philly and DC it's back to lows in the 70s with a stickier feel once again to the air.

High Heat and Humidity to fuel Severe Thunderstorms into Metro Minneapolis this PM and Evening.

The dew point in Minneapolis is now up to a steamy 73 degrees whilst La Crosse is 76 degrees, combine this with current air temperatures of 90 degrees and rising, perhaps to 95 degrees, this makes for current realfeels of 97-100 degrees, likely rising to 105 degrees by the peak heat of the afternoon. All this will allow for perfect high octane fuel for a cold front which currently is over North Dakota and NW Minnesota heading SE late afternoon just in time for the cold front to maximum it's thunderstorm potential energy as the air will become exceptionally boyant as air in the mid-90s and high moisture will allowing radily surface convergence ahead of the front and these storms that fire are likely to rotate as the southerly surface flow and the NW flow aloft will rotate these storms into supercells. Let's hope a dangerous supercell does not form over Minneapolis or there will likely be damaging winds of 70+ mph, hail, some large and perhaps damaging, torrential 1-2 inch per hour rains, wild lightening and of course there's always that tornado risk!

Moscow's All-Time record 99-degree high thanks to the Trough and Cooldown over Western Europe

Several factors have come to play in the Russian heat wave which has seen Moscow, home to some 14 million people record it's hottest ever day in recorded history. It's all thanks to 3 major weather players. 1) An incredibly dry spring and early summer throughout western Russia, the intensity of the High pressure that dominated central and Western Europe for the past month and finally the influence brought by the NE Atlantic trough, it's depth and strength in forcing an unusually strong and large high pressure cell to the east and the powerful southerly wind which the trough and high interaction created transported hot air unusually far north and directly into Moscow. High's if 95 to 98 degrees were enhanced to the magic 99-degree high as the trough nudged slightly further east, aligning surface winds and the hot air directly into the path of the Russia capital.

Extraordinary Desert Rain !!

And the Rains continue to lash Gujarat !

Sure, I did mention yesterday that there is 1 more day of rains there, but least imagined it would be with such vigour !

Kutch and Jamnagar districts bore the brunt.

Heaviest amonst the Gujarat rains as on Tuesday morning ( 24 hrs) were:

Kutch : Abdasa:103 mms, Anjar: 190 mms, Bhachau: 173 mms, Bhuj: 73 mms, Gandhidham: 100 mms,

Mandvi*: 449 mms, Mundra:116 mms,Nakhatrana: 95 mms, Rapar:104 mms

* Mandvi we discussed yesterday had recieved 124 % of its seasonal rain. But with another whopping 449mms, its got more than 250 %, with all the season's rain in a day yesterday !!

These are phenomenal for a day's rain. C'mon, this is desert territory, not a coastal region.

Kutch, has by now measured 97 % of its season's rain till Tuesday morning.

And another rain battered region,Jamnagar:

The 24 hrs rainfall as on Tuesday morning:

Jamnagar city: 466 mms,Jodia: 212 mms, Khambhalia:208 mms,Lalpur:164 mms,Kalyanpur:155 mms and Dwarka :97 mms

This district has by Tuesday recieved 97% of its season's rainfall !

Now, with Mumbai Colaba having reached its season's total, it can afford to adhere to our estimate of 2/3 days of "rest period". Required for "cleaning up" and restoring roads !

Today (Tuesday) morning, the Colaba rains for this season totalled 1923 mms. And the season's normal quota till Setember end is 1920 mms.

So, all in excess now ! I'm not talking about the lakes, mind well !
