Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

The blowtroch, blast furnace, heat from hades, a no show this year for typical hot spots?
Desert Southwest running near normal, but it's the east that's well above!

Though we are seeing highs in the 100s throughout much of the low-elevation Southwest (below 4,000ft), highs of 105-110 in Phoenix and 104-108 in Vegas is normal for this time of year. In fact frequent trough swinging through the Pacific Northwest have likely been the problem as to why we haven't seen persistent 110s, like we typically see for a stretch from June through July. Sure we've seen 114 in Phoenix but most summers in the last 10 years have seen day after day for perhaps 2-3 weeks were highs have easily topped 110 or higher. Las Vegas saw it's earlist 110 on record, yet since then it's failed to reach 110. More often than not, we should have seen perhaps 2 to as much as 6 days at or above 110. Even Death Valley, it's warmest of 123 was on it's own compared with persisted 110 to 115s at best.

Also, though Seattle has seen now temperatures as high as 95. It has been cool, unsettled and we witnessed the latest ever 75 day day there. Troughiness and deeper than normal is the culprit. Trimming back highs in the Southwest. It's been all about the "Bermuda High" out east that's ruled so far!

I wonder if this is thanks to the onset to a La Nina, rapid cooling of the Pacific. Even coastal California has endured below normal temps and a lot of this thanks to deeper than normal marine layers....

Interesting times indeed but it certainly hasn't been a bad summer at all for the Southwest, so far!

TODAY COND
A once again changeable day with more in the way of stickiness and puffy cumluus that turned cumulonimnus-like in areas. Under some dark, thundry looking clouds, rains were torrential!

Thanks for reading.
