Special report
THE CONTINENTAL EFFECT
January verses July of 2010
By Mark Vogan

The year 2010 has been one of extremes for the continent of Europe as well as parts of Asia, including Russia. During the 2009-2010 winter season, a major Arctic air mass dominated the heart of Europe from eastern Germany to Scotland were temperatures were the coldest in 20-30 years with some spots witnessing not only their coldest since the late 1970s but the coldest in recorded history for areas such as the Scottish Highlands.

Now, it's all about the heat that's blistering the heart of Europe, those same places that endured ferocious cold during particularly the period between late December and Mid-January.

In this special article I have decided to compare the coldest temperatures of January with the hottest temperatures of July in selected places of both Europe and Asia.

BEIJING, CHINA has facinated me in terms of extremes in 2010...

The coldest low in 40 years at 3 degrees and only 6 months later, the same city records it hottest temperature in 60 years with a high of 104 degrees....

The Netherlands has a similar climate to the UK and is moderated by the North Sea, therefore, like the UK, it tends to not endure true "extremes" with strong influence of a mild Atlantic flow and associated Atlantic low pressure systems which regularly push in from the UK bringing mild air, wind and rain.

2010 has seen extremes of persistent cold and snow and now in the summer, we are seeing hot, continental-air push up from Africa bringing unusual heat with 90s! It appears where the coldest air set up shop in winter, just six months ago, we are seeing every bit the opposite extreme. Bare in mind that the Netherlands highest temperature is only 101 degrees.

southwest
The ridge centered over Texas will expand it's axis across the US Southern tier and raise pressures over the Four Corners, raising surface temperatures to the highest levels of 2010 so far across the Southwest and Rockies. We may be looking at 125s and higher at Death Valley, 110s (perhaps a day at 115) at Las Vegas and 115 (likely higher) at Phoenix over the next 4-6 days. Today should see highs push 114 at Phoenix (lows around 92), 110 at Las Vegas (lows around 88), Palm Springs 112 (Lows 80), Barstow 110 (Lows around 76) Baker 114 (Lows around 78) Laughlin 116 (Lows around 93) and 124 at Death Valley (Lows around 88).
For relief, you'll continue to find morning cloud and fog linger perhaps for much of the day along the beaches of California, holding temps to only the upper 60s to around 70. LA may find clouds hold until around the 11 O'clock hour and then burn back to the Pacific, allowing highs to around 78. Coastal valleys, whilst warming over the next few days will still only top around 90 to 95 at such warm spots as Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley, Pasadena may only top around 90 but inland and you'll see Ontario push 95 to 97 whilst down in Riverside where pressures are higher and there is minimal ocean effect, highs should push 100 today. Further inland towards the the Coachella Valley and that's when you find highs progress towards the 110 mark and likely by late this week you may find you want to avoid this region as highs may push 118 to 120. As for the high desert today, Lancaster to Palmdale should warm into the low 100s! Lows tonight will be in the mid-60s for LA, near 70 for Riverside, upper 70s the further you go into the low desert. The lower Colorado River Valley should remain hot all night with 90s for most of the night, perhaps cooling down to around 90 by dawn. The high desert should cool to around 75.
northwest
Cooler with more unsettled weather across the region but the unsettled weather should be confined more towards the Rockies, and more sunshine for the PNW out towatds the ocean. Highs today, though still pleasantly warm with low 70s for Seattle and mid-70s for Portland  is much cooler than we have seen throughout the region as the high is pushed away from the PNW. East of the Cascades, under sunny skies, we should see 80s to even low 90s whilst further east into  western Montana and northern Idaho, it's only the 60s with a chance of rain showers, further south in Idaho it should be warmer and sunnier with highs around 84 at Boise and 80s across in eastern Montana with Billings perhaps reaching 83. Lows tonight should drop off to the 50s for most of the region with some 60s in urban areas.
southern plains
A very hot day ahead for Texas and Oklahoma with strong high pressure dominant and centered directly over the Lone Star State. Expect 100% sunshine and highs of 95 from Houston to San Antonio, down to Brownsville, 97-99 from Dallas to Lubbock and 94 to 96 from Oklahoma City to Tulsa. Lows will be in the mid to upper 70s across the region with 80 near the Gulf coast.
northern plains
Today should see mostly sunny skies and plenty of warm sunshine as the building ridge over Texas pushes some heat from the south northwards, producing highs of 85 at Rapid City, 80 at Bismarck, 86 at Minneapolis and 79 up at International Falls where a thudnerstorm is possible. Chicago should see 86 but thunderstorms are possible this afternoon. Further south and it will be hot with 91-94 in the St Louis to Kansas City corridor. Lows range from the 50s in the northwest to upper 60s to low 70s further east. 70-73 at Minneapolis and Chicago, 75-78 for KS to SL.
northeast
Today will be another warm, very muggy, yucky day with showers and thunderstorms for most areas from North Carolina to Maine. Some spots where embedded thunderstorms are present will release 2-4 inch rains an hour and produce localised flooding. But a uniform 1-2 inches is likely across the region. Highs should top around 85-87 degrees across the board with tonight lows dropping only to around 74-77 as the air is very muggy and there is plently of clouds and rain lingering, holding temps up.
southeast & florida
A front progressing SE through the region today will enhance shower and storm potential from the Mid-Mississippi valley to the Mid-Atlantic, but despite the increase clouds, it's will be sunny in many areas BEFORE storms blossom with daytime heating and of course the frontal energy will be the trigger!
Warmth and humidity will surge north from the Gulf and cover the region in hot air as well as juicy. Points near the Gulf may actually see only sun and no storms as the front will be further north and inland. Therefore New Orleans to Tallahassee will see a high near 95 this afternoon but even inland and nearer the front, it will be around 92-94 degrees from Memphis to Atlanta and across to Charlotte. Storms will become widespread throughout much of the Southeast from noon, throughout tonight and may progress towards New Orleans through the late evening and overnight hours. Florida will be hot, humid with thunderstorms throughout today, highs should be in the 88-95 degree range throughout the state.

Vagaries of the Weather
India & Sub-Continental Asia Weather

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

The North Konkan coastline continued to get some moderate rains due to the "compressed" off shore trough. The trough, as shown here, now lingers of the Gujarat coast down to north Konkan.

The 12 hr accumalated rainfall map shows the rain restricted to the northern-western coast, and theChennai region. The rain and the west-east cloud flow and cover from the Arabian Sea across the peninsula thru the eastern coast is due to an upper air circulation over the Thailand region. The wind flow is seen in this Thai map. Part of the clouding precipitated rains as seen in the image. Meanwhile, the monsoon axis is running thru the 2 lows shown in the Thai map, along the Northern plains, with a trough in the Bay.The axis of the monsoon trough at mean sea level passes through Ferozepur, Karnal, Bahraich, Patna, Midnapore and thence southeastwards to east central Bay of Bengal. The other branch of it has become less marked.
