southeast & florida
Today, like yesterday will display heat with pockets of thunderstorms blowing up with the heating of the day. There should be good sunshine throughout the day but in pretty much any area this afternoon, puffy cumulus can begin to ascend into the atmosphere and build thunderstorms, of which will bring localised heavy downpours, lightning and perhaps gusty winds. High today will be 91 for Atlanta, Ga with a low tonight around 72. 90 in New Orleans, La with a low around 78, 94 for Columbus, Ga with a 75 degree low, 94 at Memphis, Tn with a low around 79. For Florida, despite the typical afternoon thunderstorms likely for most areas by this afternoon, temperatures will be warmest in north and central Florida with highs pushing 95 from Tallahassee to Jacksonville down to Orlando. 90 for Tampa, across to Daytona Beach and for Miami a high should top around 91. Lows throughout the state should fall to no lower than 75 with areas only hitting 80 or 82 for the low.
northeast & mid-atlantic
Today as it appears like it's always the case this summer, it will be hot and steamy with high dew points reaching the 60s to even 70 in spots. A frontal system in the area will ignite showers and pockets of embedded storms throughout the region today but that warm, moist flow from the south continues to sweat the region in hot, tropical air. Highs today range from 89 up in Boston, 94 in New York and 94 in DC. Lows tonight likely won't fall once again, much below 78 to 80 in the heart of the cities. Humidity continues to hold nighttime temps well up.
northern plains
Today will see a relatively cool day with areas of showers and thunderstorms popping up in an isolated fashion across the Northern Plains and down into the Midwest with a higher chance south and east of the Twin Cities down into the region from Kansas City to St Louis to Chicago. Highs range from the upper 70s to low 80s throughout the Dakotas and Minnesota to low and mid-80s for Iowa and Illinois. Down by Kansas City, the southern plains blowtorch has an influence and will push temps into the 94-96 degree range for KS and 92-94 for St Louis with dew points high and making it feel between 104-110. Minneapolis will merely top 78, Chicago 83. Lows tonight range from the 50s and 60s throughout the Dakotas 60s and 70s from Fargo to Chicago and near 80 for both KS and St Louis.
southern plains
Another scorcher from Dallas to OK City with a high around 98 to 101 degrees, mid to upper 90s for west Texas but a cooler, though steamier upper 80s for Houston with a high storm potential this afternoon. Lows tonight will for sure stay up, well up... mid-70s for the coolest probably, 80-82 perhaps for Dallas and even OK City.
southwest
The cooling trend started yesterday for Phoenix and today it starts for Vegas where the high today will reach around 110 rather than 113, not that much of a cooldown, but for the desert, it's better than no cooldown eh? Moisture continues to pump north from the Baja of California bringing storms across Arizona and up into the Rockies with some of these straying west towards Nevada ana d southern California, however storms are likely more over the mountains rather than valley west of Phoenix where highs will touch 108 in PHO, 122 in Death Valley and only 80 in LA, rather than 90s. Lows tonight will range from near 90 in Vegas and Phoenix to 70s in the surrounding deserts. 70s and 60s the closer to the coast you get where fog and clous will roll in and bump up against the coastal mountains through the overnight hours.
northwest
Another pleasantly warm day with lots of sunshine and a refreshing onshore flow which will keep the coastal plain comfortable. Highs will top the 72-74 range from Seattle, 78-81 for Portland whilst the mountains are in the 60s. East of the mountains and it will be in the 80s and 90s under abundant sunshine. Further east into Montana and you run the risk of seeing showers and storms blow up over the N. Rockies, in associated with the monsoonal flow pushing up from Arizona! Lows tonight will range from the 50s in the coastla plain, 40s in the mountains and 60s to perhaps near 70 east of the mountains.

Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

HOT NIGHTS CONTINUE!

Note the 80 at Kansas City, 93 at Vegas, 95 at Phoenix, 80 at Miami, for some the lows are near typical. e.g. Miami but even for the typically hot Southwest, for highs only reaching the upper 100s to low 110s, it's quite unusual to see lows quite as hot as what we are seeing and what we saw this morning. Reason is the higher than normal humidity for this region. Bare in mind, typically in order for both Pheonix and Vegas to only fall to 90 for a low, it usually needs to top 115 or higher during the daytime...

Vagaries of the Weather
India & Sub-Contintal Asia Weather
By Rajesh Kapadia

Monday, July 19, 2010

The upper air circulation over Rajasthan has moved on into Pakistan on Sunday. But, it has considerably weakened, and has not brought meaningful rains for Rajasthan yet. As estimated in "vagaries", the W.D. did interact, and rainfall was recorded in east Rajasthan, north M.P and Haryana as a result.

Continuing our discussion from yesterday's blog, the wind flow in the Arabian Sea off the west coast has gained speed from Sunday, and is now re-routed (after the demise of Conson) to flow across India into the bay, and thence north-eastwards.

As a result, we will see the west coast rainfall momentum keeping up this week. A burst of temporary "over strengthening" of the winds on Wednesday, 21st, will result in increased rains in Konkan on that day.

The Monsoon trough is seen slanting south-east from Rajasthan in the Thai Map. The Bay end of the trough can be deemed to be conducive to form a low off the A.P. coast by 21st. And hopefully, July will not end without a system !

The central regions along the trough, M.P, Vidharbh, Chattisgarh and A.P. will continue to get moderate rains. From 21st, coastal A.P. may get some heavy falls.

Rest of interior south will have scattered rains this week.

Mumbai received 30 mms of rain on Sunday, pushing up thr total further upto 1479 mms at Colaba and 1433 mms at S'Cruz. Monday/Tuesday will be partly bright, with passing rain showers, not too prolonged. With rainfall of about 25 mms/day. Wednesday will be windy and an increase in rain intensity to 75 mms. Possibilities of sudden heavy showers.
