THE SCORCHING US OCTOBER PATTERN CHANGES SHAPE
Taking a glimpse back at ther hot October numbers across the country

After what has been a long, hot summer for much of the Lower 48 in 2010, it seems the pattern has not wanted to change even well into October. Thus has provided one of the warmest, sunniest commencements to an October in many years and perhaps on record for some spots from the Lower Midwest in through the Ohio Valley and the Mid-Atlantic states.

You only have to look at these numbers to appreciate how hot days have been even in early July.

Mankato, Minn on both the 9-10th of October topped 90 degrees, 19 and 21 degrees above normal respectively with lows only falling to the mid-50s.

Minneapolis, Minn saw 4 straight days in the 80s with the first topping an impressive 87-degree high, the low incidentally only fell to 57 degrees and the following day after a high of 83 degrees, the low fell to a mild 58 degrees. Normal high and low... 61 and 41 for Oct 12th.

Chicago, Ill on the 9th saw a high 21 degrees above normal with an 86-degree high, this commencing a near unprecidented streak of 3 days above 80 degrees, it's also one of the sunniest starts to an October for O'Hare International Airport on record.

Lexington, Kentucky topped 86 degrees on both the 10-11th.

Memphis, Tenn on the 10th saw a high reach 91 degrees, the following night the low after an 88 degree high fell to a balmy 67 degrees.

Hattiesburg, Miss endured an impressive 3-straight days which topped a 91, 93 and 93 degree high on the 8, 9, 10th.. The lows dropping into the 50s with these hot daytime highs illustrate the autumnal time of year as these lows would be more like in the 70s if it were summer. Incidentally the low to near mid-90s is impressive even this far south at this late stage in the year for sure.

Atlanta, Geog (Peachtree Apt) endured an impressive 6-day streak at or above 80 degrees with the warmest day topping 86 degrees.

RECORD HEAT NOT CONFINED TO AREAS EAST OF THE ROCKIES!

The impressive and record breaking heat which spanned the full north-south breadth of the United States also spread westwards bringing record heat to areas of the Great Basin and California where San Francisco International Airport, Calif  reported a high on the 12th of 94 degrees, a full 23-degrees above normal and this also broke a very impressive record which dated back to 1901! The following day saw yet another 1901 record broken with 92 degrees just yesterday at the airport! Even in the heart of Downtown San Francisco which is more exposed to the cooling winds off the Pacific Ocean (where as SFO is sheltered by the San Bruno Mtns) the high reached a record 89 degrees, keeping in mind the "average" high for the same date is a paltry 71 degrees!

Los Angeles, Calif, though warm or if you want to call it hot, then fair enough has seen a 6 day streak in the 80s and today may be yet another 80-degree plus day. Warmest being 93 degrees on the 10th. However, I mention whether folks in the Southland would consider this hot since they've just endured their hottest day on record just 10 days or so days ago at 113 degrees, recording at the same site (Civic Center in Dwtn). However the 93-degree high is still some 13-degree above the normal of 80 and is nothing to sniff at considering they've endured a summer of cool, foggy, cloudy weather. This all appears such a vast, seemingly unprecidented contrast indeed for this region.

100s IN THE DESERT WHEN LOW 90S ARE NOW NORMAL

Palm Springs, Calif have seen 4-straight days in the low 100s with a range from 100 to 102 degrees, though this doesn't seen all that hot, remember the "average high" is now 93, therefore these highs are nearly 10 degrees above normal for this time.

Yesterday's high at nearby Indio, southeast of Palm Springs in the Coachella Valley was the warmest US spot at 104 degrees, 11 degrees above the norm for this site. Death Valley is also reflecting the time of year in the desert as it's high is no warmer than Indio with an equal 104 degrees for the highest for the month. Death Valley's average now is down from 115 degrees in July to 94 degrees for October 13th. The lows of late have actually been more impressive for DV with an 81-degree low on the 11th, this is an impressive 17-degrees above the normal of 64.

MAJOR COOLING ON THE CARDS FOR MUCH OF THE AREAS THAT HAVE ENDURED THE RECORD HEAT OF OCTOBER AND SUMMER

A major shot of cool Canadian air is set to drop into the Northern tier and penetrate all the way to the Gulf in the coming 5-7 days and models suggest reinforcing shots of colder air over the second half of October and into November, all but erasing the extended summer across the Lower 48. Yes, it should be cold enough sooner rather than later for snow flurries (heavy snow for the downwind areas of the Lakes) into the Northern Plains, Ohio Valley and areas of the Northeast, heavier amounts in the mountain areas. Also the Appalachains may also be whitened. All this as well as temperatures which have been uniformly above normal across perhaps 90% or more of the country may see 70% at or below normal in the next 5-10 days.

The pattern is shifting towards winter and this warmth was on borrowed time for sure.

Record Cold in Alaska

September 29th, 2010 at 12:33 am by Bill Steffen under Bill’s Blog, Weather

Barrow, Alaska – where they already have 3″ 0f snow on the ground. At Barrow, they’ve had light snowfall nine days in a row. Northway, Alaska also reports 2″ of snow on the ground. I’ve been on record for several months saying this winter was going to be colder than last winter over Alaska and a good portion of Canada (and warmer from Texas to Florida and up at least as far as Washington, D.C.)bp.blogspot.com/_URv-xJYdM20*rly…and it has. Get a load of these low temperatures in September: -11°F near Beaver Village, -10° near Chalkyitsik. Chicken, Alaska was -5°. Bettles reached ZERO on Monday, tying the coldest temperature ever recorded there in September. Eielson AFB near Fairbanks was +3°, and that was the coldest temperature they have ever had in any September (the average low for Fairbanks now is 28°). Daily records were set at Eagle (0°), Gulkana (3°), King Salmon (17°) and Cold Bay (31°). St. Paul Is. reported a north wind at 33 mph with gusts to 46. Juneau (named for Joe Juneau, an occasionally drunk miner) had a cold rain and an east wind at 28 mph with gusts to 38 mph as I write this. Enjoy the mild air while we’ve got it. The Alaska cold is going to meet the southern warmth over the Great Lakes this winter. The fun should start in November.
