Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

In order for extreme heat, cold or storms to occur, you need the cold as well as warm!

It's been sometime now since I've discussed in any extensive way a topic relating to global warming and I've chosen over recent months to take focus more on weather rather than delving into the whole ugly global warming argument, is it man-made or natural...

However, the extremes of 2010 have seemed to be almost outragous and I do think that someone as deeply facinated and has studied weather for some 15 years now, I am avoiding things by not at least making my own opinions heard and voiced to you my loyal readers regarding the current climatic hardship we may or may not be in in relation to the greater picture, I'm talking about the entire history of our earth's climate, where does this current set-up of climate come into the greater historical past?, Is this unusual, perhaps this is not a fraction of the turbulent times our climate has undergone in the years before we were around, but then again, perhaps it is.

The current early October heat that's been baking many areas of the US with mid to upper 80s being reached in Minneapolis and Chicago and even 90s being topped in Redwood Falls and Mankato, Minnesota with a July-like look and feeling in a time when trees should be becoming bare and winds crisply whistling more from the north. This is only the latest weather event to bring up global warming in what has been a year of extremes that seemed to start as we entered the year.

My stance is this, in order to produce the heatwave across Moscow, the extreme rains seen across India, Pakistan and China, the extreme heat across the US and even the severe thunderstorms etc etc etc this summer, you need both hot AND COLD to produce these events...

My belief is that our earth is undergoing or at least is about to undergo a transition BACK TO COLD and in order for it to do so, extreme weather occurs, whether it be unusual heat in autumn or unusual cold in spring, those two, do appear to be becoming increasingly more common don't they? Here in Scotland, May saw the coldest nights since 1996, then August saw unsusually cold nights at the close of the month and indeed in September, we saw lows down to -4.4C, 24 degrees F, that number is apparently the lowest on record for September in Scotland!

It's also been another dissapointing summer across much of Britain, perhaps from the Midlands of England, northward! A severe cold winter across pretty much all of Europe and many areas of the US and well as one of the coldest ever winter's in Siberia as well as Scandinavia. We here in Scotland have endured record cold on both sides of summer 2010, so can we call this global warming at the same level as the other extreme events across the world?, because why are we seeing record cold? plus I've spoken to many folks that have lived in this area of Scotland for years and say they haven't seen snow lie on these hills just to the north of my house and elevated LESS THAN 1,000 FEET above sea level as late as it did this spring, there was snow still on them well into MAY and it remained permanently since Dec 18, 2009!

Yes, I can understand people who have seen perhaps the first 10 months of 2010 the supposedly "warmest period on record" for their area or country, or the poor folks of China, Pakistan or India who have seen record-breaking rains and flooding, but unfortunately, we'll NEVER know for absolute fact whether these events haven't occured as bad or worse before our lifetime. Whether this cycle of so-called "extreme weather events" is normal or becoming the new normal and is something created by man or is completely natural is a hard one to call, but I do believe the linkage is there that our transition to cooling is unleasing these weather events outwith the normal and have occured throughout the years in the past, it's just that media facination is creating exageration and with various bodies out there trying to promote their thing, then these events are being used and manipulated... It's like a store trying to promote their new product, it's glossed up and looks good in order for you to buy it.
