Moscow to be cold and snowy the rest of this week
By Mark Vogan

According to the BBC forecast for Moscow, Russia, the high for the capital is to only be 4C at the most and lows are to creep down to around freezing, winter has returned after a summer which brought the worst heat in living memory. Snows this week, that will likely whiten the ground and create travel issues for the some 14 million residents, this is a stark reminder that summer's memories will soon fade and a reminder of what their weather is typically like and better known for is back and back perhaps a little earlier than many would like.

Indeed, long-range forecasts are calling for a severe winter for Russia in 2010-2011 and some sources are saying that Russia is to face their worst winter in 1,000 years, is this the start of that winter that followed a summer from hell? My winter forecast which comes out on October 31st will discuss the winter I believe Moscow and the rest of Russia may face.

Actual Air Temperature Verses Direct Sunlight Temperature
It was the difference between 54 degrees and 80 degrees!

As you may know already, actual air temperatures are recorded generally at around 6 feet off the ground and in a shaded box known as a Stevenson Screen which has gaps or slats within the box for air to circulation within it.

Yesterday where it was almost perfectly sunny and with light winds blowing, after my high for the day was reached around mid-afternoon and the temperature "in the shade" was already dropping again, I placed my sensor in direct sunlight to find out how warm the sunlight feels even as late as October 11. My actual air temperature reading for yesterday topped off at a dissapointing, though not surprising reading for this time of year of 54 degrees, yes that was the "actual" high which gets placed in my records here at my house. However, under direct sunlight and even at 4.40pm in the afternoon when the actual temperature was dropping down towards the 40s, the reading in the direct sunlight reached an impressive 80.8 degrees! This means that when it's said that oh, the high was a crisp 54 and folks go, huh, didn't feel that bad or I thought it actually felt warm... well in the sun and with no wind to shave the warm feeling off the direct sun, it did feel nice..

In mid-summer and on a day where the sun is strong, there is little clouds and you feel like it's 80, 90 or even 100 degrees out side, it is because your in direct sunlight and yes it probably is 90 or more degrees in the sun when the actual air temperature (shade temperature) may only be 75 degrees..

So I found it interesting at how much warmer it actually is in the direct sun and even in October, remembering that the sun is still high enough in the sky to warm the ground and air strongly despite the lengthening shadows I can see at the bottom of my south facing garden.

Eventually, once the sun is low enough, even in direct sunlight, it won't feel near as warm as the 80-degrees the sun was heating us to yesterday... You only had to step into a shaded area yesterday and with a slight breeze blowing to feel how brisk the air is actually becoming, the moral is, from now on, try and get yourself into the direct sun as much as possible to hold on to the very last of those warm rays!! It's going to drop too low soon and we'll need to wait until March when those rays of warmth return!!
