Severe Weather Outlook for Today - Monday, July 11, 2011

A severe bow echo, which is producing widespread damaging winds, continues to race Eastward across southern Lake Michigan and northern Indiana this morning.  This system produced widespread wind damage across the Chicago area a short time ago.  Below is a recent radar image showing the bow echo as well as the Severe Thunderstorm Watch that is currently in effect along and ahead of the system until 12 Noon CDT:

This system will continue to move and/or develop toward the East and possibly even Southeast today, traversing much of the Northern half of the red shaded area on the latest SPC Severe Weather Outlook for today, which is shown below:

Widespread wind damage can be expected along and ahead of this system.  Large hail is also possible in some spots.  Additional and/or new development is likely to take place to the South of this system later this afternoon, across the remainder of the red shaded area on the above image.  Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary threat with this activity into the evening hours.

Elsewhere, severe thunderstorms are forecast within the yellow shaded areas on the above image this afternoon and evening.  Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary threat, however isolated tornado development also cannot be ruled out, particularly with any storm that is able to remain more isolated and become well organized.

An enhanced threat of large hail exists within the red shaded areas on the image below:

If you live in the Midwest or Ohio Valley ahead of the ongoing line of severe storms, remain alert and listen for later statements and/or warnings throughout the day.  If you live elsewhere, further West, in the severe weather outlook area, remain alert this afternoon and evening and be prepared to seek shelter if threatening weather approaches your area.
