Severe Weather Outlook for Today, Friday, July 8, 2011



Above is the latest severe weather outlook for today from the SPC in Norman, OK. Severe storms are forecast within the yellow shaded areas on the image.  


Severe thunderstorms are expected to form along and ahead of a cold front and fast moving upper-level disturbance across the northern Plains this afternoon and evening.  Very large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes will be possible with this activity.


Across the Tennessee Valley, Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast, clusters or small bands of strong to severe storms are forecast to develop by mid to late afternoon and into this evening.  Damaging winds will be the greatest threat with this actiivty, with some areas of large hail also possible.


The highest threat of damaging straight-line and/or downburst winds with severe storms today is forecast within the red shaded areas on the image below.  This includes the Baltimore/Washington area as well as much of Virginia:




If you live within any of the severe weather threat areas, and within the red shaded areas on the above image in particular, please keep alert this afternoon and evening and be prepared to seek shelter if threatening weather approaches your area.
