Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

After a week of sunshine and 70s, is our Summer here in the UK over?

Here at my house, I have enjoyed 70 to 71 degree highs with mostly sunny skies and after early last week's chilly nights which dropped down into the 30s and low 40s, giving way to mid to upper 60s, the week just got better as nights became mild and days warm. The high which anchored itself across the UK continued warming bringing back the look and feel of summer.

Interestingly, this morning's very mild low of only 58 degrees was exactly 20 degrees warmer than Tuesday's downright cold 38 degrees for August 31st and in fact just two degrees lower than the warmest low recorded the entire summer here at my house.

A new weather system is knocking on our western doorstep and has been bringing heavy and persistent rains to Ireland and Northern Ireland today and is expected to continue pressing eastwards over the next few days, erasing our warmth and sun and dropping our highs back into the low and mid-60s with heavy rain and windy conditions expected much of this upcoming week across much of the UK. Last night saw breezy and showery conditions here in Lennoxtown and clouds as well as a breeze throughout today, reducing our high to 67 degrees, rather than the 70 degrees we've seen over the past 3 straight days providing us with a taste of Indian summer, albeit brief. The question is, as this new weather system rolls on across Britain, bringing a return to the more unsettled pattern and pushes out the high, is summer now over?

I don't think so, and I do see warmer, more settled weather return before true autumn sets in, I don't believe we've seen the last of 70 degrees but those days are being more and more numbered as we enter the mid-September timeframe. Even October, though presenting us with our first true cold and frosty mornings, may also bring days which flirt or top out at 70 degrees... For central and particularly southern parts of Britain, 70 degrees can hold on into mid-October!
