northeast
FINALLY it's back to HOT for the Northeast after below normal weather, particularly for New England with even NYC right around average and it's only been points down by Philly and into the Balt-Wash area that's got a taste of the Southern heat which has bumped up against a front right between Philly and New York and has held the 90s at bay. Well high pressure builds up from the Southeast allowing New York into the mid-80s, much more closer to levels of DC, rather than the 8-10 degree divide of late. Up in Boston, the change could not be greater with highs today pushing 90 degrees would you believe after days where it's rained, been overcast and highs that have struggled to reach 70. More heat in the build in across the entire Northeast this weekend! Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow.
Southeast
The heat continues as per usual across the Southeast with highs generally right around 90 to 93 degrees across most areas including the cities from New Orleans to Memphis to Atlanta to Charlotte. A cold front will swing through the Carolinas and possibly down into South Georgia and even North Florida, this may fire up some widespread afternoon and evening thunderstorms, some of which may turn severe... Night lows should be between 70-78 degrees for the entire region with warmest lows nearer the Gulf and Atlantic coast as always. Florida may see many areas with thunderstorms so if you live in Florida be sure to stay safe this afternoon as there's a high t-storm risk this afternoon.
southwest
In terms of sunshine, you can't beat it in the Southwest. The only thing that's slight out for late June is the daytime highs which you'd expect to see in the 100s by now. Las Vegas and points surrounding are a little cooler than normal or right on normal. Today I expect highs right around 99 for Vegas, around 80 for Salt Lake and 80 for Reno. Along the coast, LA may struggle to top 75 with a substantial morning marine layer and a peel back to the coast as always by noon, though many coastal areas may not see sun much of the day. San Diego may be one of those places with a highs that may fail get beyond the mid-60s. Up in San Francisco we're looking at mid-60s there. The area that's right around normal is Phoenix and points to the south where pressures are nearer normal values for the time of year. Highs today should top 104-106 this afternoon with some spots locally topping 110, Death Valley included.
northwest
It remains cool and unsettled across the Northwest with highs barely reaching 60 and nights that may drop into the 40s from Seattle to Portland. Areas inland and particularly high in elevation may fall below or well below freezing!
northern plains
After the deadly storms across Minnesota. The only storm today will be fond down across the lower Midwest into the mid-Mississippi valley from Little Rock to St Louis to Chicago. Highs will be warm and the air will feel muggy with 80s across Chicago and into Detroit, 90s from souther Illinois down into Sta Louis where we may see a high of 94 today. The storm risk remains from Chicago down to Little Rock and throughout the Mississippi and Ohio Valley and the storm system and the surge of warm humid air is transported north. It should be a nice day for the eastern Dakotas into Minnesota with low 80s and sun for Minneapolis, upper 80s but storm likely for Chicago. Western Dakotas should see rainier weather, associated with the northwest trough and persistent Pacific storms rolling in. High in northwest North Dakota may remain in the 50s today!
southern plains
Get that sunblock on if your in Texas and intend on going outside this afternoon. Highs for most places from Houston north and west will see highs well into the 90s with Dallas to Lubbock soaring towards or even above 100..

Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

REVISED
MARK VOGAN'S UNITED KINGDOM SUMMER 2010 FORECAST

Well, it feels like the winter of 2009-10 is out of our system and we're now enjoying decent warmth and persistently sunny, dry weather. Of course we have seen the odd wet, dull day here and there but I think you'll agree that on the whole, our weather this spring has been good with some decent warm spells which have pushed northern UK areas into the mid to upper 70s (24-26C) and central and southern areas have topped 80 (28C) with the warmest so far being 84 degrees at Heathrow Airport.

I remain confident, if not even more so now than back on April 1st, that the pattern we've seen, the now, tangable evidence from what was non-tangable when I issued my Preliminary Summer Forecast, our summer will be SUNNIER than normal which will produce a WARMER AND DRIER summer. The ground across the entire UK landmass is drying out and continues to do so. We saw a locked, stubborn weather pattern over us during the winter. I believe we will see yet another "locked pattern" which ultimately began at the close of 2009. The warmer air will eventually settle over us for good and we have generally flirted with the hot air, so far it's been warm but it's sooner rather than later we begin to see the truely hot air move up from the south and may set up shop over Britain until late August, providing one very warm to hot and stubbornly dry anticyclonic CONTINENTAL pattern over us between now (June 18 through August 10) providing a heatwave for perhaps a 10-day stretch during July.

The dry pattern, the ever closer push of a truly hot air mass is knocking on our door now (west of Britain) and will eventually progress east, bringing 80-degree heat to Scotland and 90 degree heat to the Midlands of England, central and southern-interior Wales and throughout the southern half of England. Glasgow to Edinburgh may see 1-3 days in which highs take a run at 86 degrees (30C) and nights that struggle to fall to 68-70 degrees (20-21C) for overnight lows, whilst London may see highs run well into the 90s (mid-30s) with a national maximum of perhaps 95-97 degrees (34-36C) at some point between Jul 10-25 with stifling nights that fail to fall below 70 or even 73 degrees (21-23C) will make for some of the warmest nights you'll ever find in Britain. Since rain will become scarce, throughout Britain, with the exceptions of possibly the far north and northwest of Scotland as well as the Orkneys and Shetland. Much of the rain that does fall may be more in the form of heat induced thunderstorms with CONVECTION exploding over a hot UK landmass. Draw in cooling winds off the surrounding North Sea, English Channel, Irish Sea and Atlantic and some sea breeze convergence, particularly over hills and mountains may bring intense downpours and we may also enjoy some wild and vivid lightening displays since heat should become the norm this summer for a change.

The drought conditions we may see from mid-July onwards may rival those of the 1990s when hose pipe bans became a common thing. Do we reach hose pipe ban levels? Who knows but I do think we may struggle to get rains in, once this pattern locks in place. Right now, the final wheels of the strue summer pattern are starting to turn. It will become just as extreme as it's winter cousin.. Remember how extreme we got during the winter? Well now we face the extreme on the other side of the coin....
