Today marks the commencement of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Today marks Day 1, I wonder what the next six months will bring, how many storms and more importantly, how many impacts, where they will strike and how severe, since Ike hit Texas in Sept 2008, the US have been relatively spared but if forecasts and expectations hold true, the US as well as other countries may find their luck run out this year. God willing, those in the historical pathway of hurricanes will have their plan in place and be ready to leave if need be. This blog will be releasing the hurricane site shortly and will keep you posted and updated throughout this hurricane season.

ALL SYSTEMS GO!!! TEXAS BBQ...

Today is the first "official" or historic start to hurricane season and though there is quiet at the moment in the Atlantic, lets enjoy that and use this time to take those hurricane plans out of the closet and dust them down. Americans have returned to a state of amnesia I believe since the great hurricanes of Katrina, Rita and Wilma, particularly for those living along the Florida coastlines and up the East Coast where strikes have been minimal and relatively weak compared with history. Miami-Dade and surrounding South Florida are the most exposed, most dangerous region in terms of likilihood of a strike. There has simply be no true threat since Wilma in 2005 to Florida as a whole and that is likely or highly possible to change in 2010. Those up the East Coast have generally been spared and the last true test was indeed Isabel in 2003.

Without scaring people I strongly believe that with waters as warm as they've ever been in recorded history for this early in the Atlantic and the rapid warming from a cold Gulf in early Spring and indeed the strong favouring of lower than normal sea surface pressures in the tropical breeding grounds. Not just 1 but quite possibly 2-3 MAJOR landfalls could be on the cards for the US coast. The question is, if that was to occur, where would they hit? One must worry about 3 key worst case locales. 1) MIAMI and surrounding areas 2) The NEW ORLEANS area which is still recovering 5-years on after Katrina and 3) the NORTHEAST which is home to 1 quarter on the US population....

This blog will keep you well updated on the latest from the tropics and what's brewing...

INTENSIFYING HIGH PRESSURE FROM THE DESERT SOUTHWEST TO TEXAS
No relief for at least 10-days

A major heat is now building over Texas and forcing surface temps well into the 90s across Texas today and this week, with each of the next 5-days growing hotter under and intensifying upper ridge which brought the first truely HOT day to Death Valley, California where the high topped 109 degrees.

Houston to Dallas is going to push the 100 degree mark through late this week with some spots in the West Texas desert which may push 110 degrees.

It appears the warmth is now finally locking in for the West after a dissapointing spring across the Desert Southwest with 5 to as much as 15 degrees BELOW NORMAL as the trough persisted. The deserts should see upper 90s to low 100s for the next several days with Vegas looking at highs generally in the mid to upper 90s and Phoenix upper 90s to low 100s (98-105). It's basically a return to more typical early June conditions as the Four Corners high SHOULD be in place and strong enough these days to produce warm nights and hot days to your classic hot spots. The major heat should anchor for the forseeable future across Texas with persisted mid to upper 90s for the Houston area and with 70 to near 80 dew points seeping out of the ever warming Gulf, this heat will be dangerous. Up on the desert or steppe of central Texas, spots such as Dallas will roast day after day under cloudless skies and a blistering hot sun, highs should warm into the low 100s to near 105 by this weekend and perhaps well into next week. True Texas BBQ style.

This heat will also warm other steam bath Gulf Coast locales such as New Orleans where dew points of tropical 80-degree levels combined with low to mid-90s will make for exceptional heat indexes, stay safe and stay hydrated. I believe this heat will expand into the Tennessee valley as well as east into the Southeast through the weekend.. Stay tuned as I shall update you more on this situation later.

AFTER A ROTTEN TUESDAY, WARMING AND CLOUDLESS SUNNY DAYS TO END UK WORKWEEK

When pulling back your curtains this morning, I bet you said, huh, first of June eh? It's utter miserible out there with very low, dreary cloud and that fine, soaking rain... Well, yes I said the same thing but what raised my spirits was the fact that I know high pressures was once again progressing northwards towards us from the sub-tropics and what force the return to sunnier, drier and warming conditions starting tomorrow. This roller-coaster spring continues as after a few days in the upper 50s to around 60 for us here in the Central Belt of Scotland and only upper 60s to around 70 for the very warmest spots of England and Wales, yes we're in for more warmth with tomorrow a step up with more sun than clouds for much of the UK and by Thursday we should have 70 for the Central Belt under brilliant sunshine and cloudfree skies and for the south of England and Wales highs should take a run into the UPPER 70s and likely an 80 for Friday...

Thursday, Friday and Saturday should see 90% of the UK landmass cloudfree or 90% cloudfree with pleasant summer warmth and EXCELLENT BBQ weather!
