your america today forecast
by mark vogan

northeast
A beautiful day for the Northeast, ranging from mid 80s for the DC to Philly area, upper 70s for NYC and low 70s to perhaps upper 60s for New England. Plenty of sun and low humidity! Lows tonight will be uniform with near 70 for DC-Balt. Upper 60s for Philly, low 60s for NYC to Boston and 50s for New England!
southeast
Today will be a typical June day for the Sunbelt with highs running close to or slightly above 90 degrees for the high and lows running from the low 70s in the north, upper 70s for the coast. High pressure as always, though not as strong for some western regional areas, will allow plenty of sunshine and only the Gulf Coast and Florida will see a risk of t-storms today. Mark's City-Cast as follows. Miami, Hi 93 (dew point, 75), Lo 80, chance of storms. New Orleans, Hi 92 (dew point 75) Lo 79, Atlanta, Hi 91, (dew point, 70), Lo 74.
southwest & northwest
Unfortunately the persistent cool and rainy weather continues for the northwest with rain showers forecast from Seattle to Portland with highs ranging from the low to mid 60s for Seattle, near 70 for Portland. Incredibly, Highs in areas of Montana will be only in the 40s! Snow is forecast for sections of Glacier and perhaps Yellowstone N.P's, so nighttime temps will likely near or drop below freezing with snow showers.
Across the Southwest and West Coast, we shall see highs range from the 105-110 for Phoenix and low deserts. near 103 for Vegas and around 80 for LA. Along the central CA coast we see a decent onshore flow with highs between 66 and 71 at San Francisco. Death Valley will likely top 110. Tonight lows should range from 48 to 52 from Seattle to Portland, across interior sections and into the N. Rockies, 40s to 20s with perhaps the odd place seeing teens with clear skies, light winds and snow in the ground! The deserts should range from 70-80 in low desert to 65-75 in high desert. LA to Monterey should range from 50 to 60.
southern plains
Yet another hot day with abundant sunshine. High range from low 90s in Houston to near 100 in Dallas. Low to mid-90s for the western region with a chance of thunderstorms. Night lows should be uniform between 70 in the west to upper 70s in the east.
northern plains
Across the N. Plains and into the Midwest it should be a good day for the most part with highs running into the 80s and feeling good. However thunderstorms and some of which will turn severe will spoil the show as the day progresses as a front pushes west to east throughout this afternoon. Mark's City-Cast as follows. St Louis, Hi 93 (risk of PM storms), Lo 75. Chicago, Hi 86 (sunny), Lo 69. Minneapolis, Hi 87 (sunny/breezy), Lo near 70. Minot, Hi 72 (showers), Lo 54.

Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

Unbearable Heat and Humidity persists for Southern Tier of US, remains a little cool for Desert Southwest. Scotland and most of England enjoying June Warmth! Extremely hot for Basra, Iraq!
UK Warming Up, Drying Out as forecasted By Mark Vogan, back on April 1

For many areas of the Northern Hemisphere's mid-latitude, it's warm to hot, whilst some spots remain on the cool side for mid-June, including the Desert Southwest of America.

We here in central Scotland, down to northern sections of England enjoyed the warmest air in the UK yesterday with a high here at my house of 75 degrees and indeed it climbed to 78 degrees at Carlisle, Cumbria for the nations hotspot. Though parts of the southern half of England and Wales as well as Ireland were warm, the core of the warmth was found between Glasgow and Penrith and this was forecasted way back on Sunday on this blog. The warmth will trim somewhat this weekend as the high shifts and brings winds down from the north, however the good news is, even northerly winds at this time of year, aren't "cold", just cooler than what we've enjoyed the past few days. Those winds will once again shift in about 48 hours, allwoing us to return to the 70s for Tuesday-Wednesday.

It's becoming drier and drier across much of the UK and this is impacting farming and indeed reducing reservoir levels. Which I've witnessed for myself as I drive between Glasgow and Largs (Ayrshire). The reservoir levels near Mills Dairy, which was frozen over much of last winter appears to have half the amount of water it did back in March. Could this dry up? I shall be taking photos to show you these lower water levels soon.

See tomorrow's WEATHER TALK for long-term weather for UK.....

The American South continues to feel hotter-than-normal weather. Persistent 90s are poppinh up day after day from Texas to the Carolinas and this appears to be remaining so, for at least the next 3-5 days before the Bermuda ridge perhaps shifts slightly. Humidity levels remaining higher than normal, solely due to the now abnormally warm Gulf is making the intolerable heat much worse and indeed dangerous with daily heat indexes topping 100 in most places with some Gulf Coast and Florida coastal areas enduring mid-90s or warmer and dew points in and around 80 is forcing concerns to health.

The American Southwest appears to be the place that's not seeing the normal 100s for Las Vegas and bearely 100 for both Phoenix and Death Valley, until the blowtorch resumes for this classic global hotspot, the heat further east won't ease and right now, the hot focus is on Texas with Dallas soaring to near 100 every day...

Basra, Iraq, witnessing the hottest air on earth day after day.

Islamabad, Pakistan was for the past few months the global hotspot but as expected the monsoonal circulation has kicked in and progressed north from the Indian Ocean, this has indeed shifting the powerful high pressure cell which back last month produced a reading in Pakistan of 128 degrees, making this the hottest ever May reading in the World. The high was shifted to Saudi Arabia, producing highs around 120. Now it's shifted to Iraq as the monsoonal flow and circulation intenses. This means Iraq has endured classic heat with daily readings topping 122 degrees at Basra...

 Vagaries of the Weather
India & Sub-Continental Asia Weather
By Rajesh Kapadia

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

The pieces have fallen well in place, with the trough off the western coast of India, embedded with a vortex off North Maharashtra coast, producing the heavy rains predicted, and moving the monsoon northwards into south Gujarat and all of Maharashtra. The limit of the monsoon is seen in the 200jet stream map.Easterlies indicate the monsoon limit normally.

Some of the heavy rainfall figures of rain recorded on tuesday(day n night) for Konkan coast are (in cms):

Sangamneshwar-23,Khed-15,Dapoli-13,Chiplun-12,

Mahableshwar 14cms, Dahanu 11cms,Ratnagiri 10cms, Mumbai S'cruz 9cms and colaba 8cms

The lakes of Mumbai too recieved very good rainfall on Tuesday, a boon to the city:Vihar-16, Bhatsa-7, Upper Vaitarna-5, Tansa-4, Tulsi-3,Vaitarna-2.

For Mumbai, heavy rains were predicted on this blog,,Monday thru Wednesday,At least a week in advance."Vagaries of the Weather" had estimated 23cms of rain Monday thru Wednesday for the city, and the actual rain recorded was20cms at colaba and 18cms at S'Cruz, till Wednesday evening.

And flooding and water logging and gusty winds was anticipated. The tall claims of the authorities have fallen like a pack of cards,in spite of the fact that flooding was expected.More than 20 low lying areas in the city were flooded knee deep, and Walls have collapsed.Landslides in Thane have led to much damage, and importantly, loss of lives.

Same old story!Forget the hoodwinking of the Shanghai story!Better would be a Venice promise,it will be easier !

The off shore trough will hang on, but the vortex off Mumbai, I expect, will cross inland. The result should be some torrential rains in North Madhya Maharashtra on Thursday.

Konkan rains will linger on till Saturday, though reduced.

Mumbai will see the rains gradually reducing from Thursdsay, and the weekend should be comparitively drier, with about 25-30mms of rain/day.

The rest of the west coast areas will continue to get moderate rains, around 35mms/day till Sunday.

On Wednesday,

Highest in Asia:Basrah(Iraq): 50c
Highest in India:Patna: 42c

A cloudy start which burnt off by noon, providing clear skies and abundant, strong sunshine which allowed substantial surface warming, winds also remained light , allowing readings to remain at 75 degrees from between 3pm until 6pm. Even at 10.30pm we we're still at 66 degrees.
