southern plains
Whilst the remnant low of TD 5 floats in a loop over the Deep South and may well return to the Gulf and push westward towards the Texas or LA coast, high pressure remains the center story of weather and has done for much of this summer. Look for abundant sun and highs which could push towards 100 over Downtown Houston, 104 in Dallas, Amarillo 95, Lubbock 100, San Antonio 100 and even 102 in El Paso. North of Dallas in Oklahoma, highs in spots may approach 110 whilst Oklahoma City should warm towards 105. Humidity levels from Brownsville to Bay City may hover in the middle 70s, with some coastal inlets enduring 95 degree heat and 80-degree dew points, making it feel like 110 or higher. Lows tonight may appraoch the warmest levels for lows this summer with Houston expected to only drop off to near 81 tonight, Galveston may see lows merely "cool" to 85. From Dallas to OK City look for lows also around 80 or warmer!
southeast & florida
A soupy, sticky, showery and thundery day ahead across many areas stretching from New Orleans to Atlanta, up to Charlotte as the remnant low of Tropical Depression 5 floats and circles the Southeast atmosphere, enhancing cloudiness and indeed shower and thunderstorm activity. I wouldn't be surprised if some areas see a mostly cloudy day with an unusual "persistent rainy day" with temps holding in the low 80s! A welcome forecast I'm sure for many! Look for highs to be uniformly stuck in the 80s today for more or less everywhere for south Louisiana and south Mississippi and most of Alabama, all of Georgia, the Carolinas and eastern Tenneessee. Central and Northern Louisiana will warm into the 90s with a few northern cities closing in on 100, such as Shreveport, LA. Memphis should top 100 as well as Little Rock thanks to the influence of the powerhouse ridge over the Mid-Mississippi Valley. New Orleans will warm to 88, Atlanta 84-85 and Charlotte 84. Florida will as usual be in the upper 80s at the beaches, low to mid-90s for inland areas, humidity will be in the low to mid-70s with thunderstorms possible anywhere. Showers and showers are over 50% likely for the Southeast today! Lows tonight will be as warm as 80-84 for areas under the ridge, low 70s for areas under mostly cloudy skies today, upper 70s for Gulf Coast areas and Florida.
northwest
RECORD BREAKING HEAT from the coast to the inland coastal plain as a strong ridge center's itself over interior Washington, this will fire up the easterlies and as they blow westwards TOWARDS the ocean, temps are going to ramp up. How hot will it be? Well under abundant sunshine all the way to the waves of the Pacific, look for 80s for the beaches, 90-94 for Seattle (southwest interior may approach 97-99), Portland may approach 100 degrees and some interior coastal valley areas may see 100-105 degrees. Eastern Washington and Oregon will likely warm into the mid-90s, but western WA and OR will see the most impressive heating as winds downslope the Cascades and Olympics, in fact Forks on the Washington coast, west of the I-5 corridor will warm perhaps to the upper 90s, yesterday they saw a 23 degree spike in 2 hours as east winds blew hard, even gusty across Seattle out of the north, today they will blow out of the "east" and therefore propel temps from yesterday's 80s to today's 90s.
southwest
A typical day from the California Coast to desert. Morning clouds and fog will burn by midmorning allowing temps to warm into the upper 60s on the beaches to mid-70s in downtown LA, San Diego may once again fail to top 70 as well as downtown San Francisco. Coastal valleys should warm into the upper 80s to low 90s. Desert communities will warm to seasonal levels or slightly higher with Palm Springs eyeing 107-110, Barstow 100-105, Baker 110, Death Valley 117. Las Vegas will be sunny with a high around 107, with stronger high pressure over Arizona we should see 110 for Phoenix. Lows tonight range from 50s to around 60 from the beach to downtowns of the major cities, 70s for the deserts, 80s for Death Valley, Vegas and Phoenix.
northern plains
From Cut Bank, Billings to Minot, highs will be chilly and in the 60s with showers and perhaps the odd storm as the trough pushes east to make way for the PNW high, it will be a poor Saturday for much of the Northern Rockies under cloud. Despite sunshine in the central Rockies, the trough and cooler air sloft will only support low 80s at the surface for Denver and a slightly warmer 87 under glorious sunshine for Salt Lake. Further east and warmer temps will control the surface under sunny skies for Minneapolis after a rough night of weather. Look for high around 88 for downtown MSP. The line of strong storms are further south and east making for a rough day across the Chicagoland area where the temp will warm beyond 90, humidity will be high and the atmosphere charged for the front. Storms will also fire in the even hotter air further downstate Illinois with upper 90s. St Louis should warm to 98 with a storm threat. Lows tonight may creep into the 40s over Montana and North Dakota, low 70s for MSP and Chicago, mid to upper 70s for St Louis.
northeast & mid-atlantic
A gorious August weekend on tap for the Northeast under sunshine, low humidity and highs in the low 80s for DC and Baltimore, mid to upper 70s from Philly to Boston. Lows tonight will creep to comfortable levels with the cities dropping into the 60s, rural areas should see 50s with some sheltered spots dropping into the cool 40s!

SOUTHERN STATES IN HEART OF HOTTEST TIME OF YEAR, OTHER SPOTS READY FOR FALL

Whilst places across the US Southern Plains statistically are in the heart of their hottest time of the year. Points further north are beginning to eye fall as the worst of summer's heat is likely beyond them.

Houston as well as other Southern cities tend to see theire hottest weather "on average" during the first half of August adn certainly the weather map matches the stats as much of Texas endured the continuatiuon of a long and gruelling heatwave, in fact a long and gruelling hot summer. As for the Northern Rockies it's a cool, cloudy day with highs in the 60s, yet over the Pacific Northwest it's the hottest day of the summer so far, yet their statistically beyond their hottest time of year. Indid a current 93 degree temp in Seattle on August 14th is perhaps hot, in fact hot for any point in summer but it shows that August, despite seeing a reduction in daylight and temperature doesn't always mean summer's over!

However, the cooler air is growing, here in central Scotland, we have seen an overall dissapointing summer and now we start to see longer nights and increasingly shorter days. Though days remain mild and nights cool, the atmosphere tends to lag and therefore sometimes fall or even winter can be later at times than others. I am beginning to look at night temps during clear nights as typical lows over the past 6-8 weeks has overall been in the 50s, only a mere 2-3 nights have dropped into the 40s, yet I am beginning to feel a crisper air and am looking at readings more and more at night. Frost is not far away, in fact give a month from now, under clear, calm skies and a light frost is possible, even during the later half of August, a low of 48 is enough to produce a heavy dew, lows below 40 are enough to produce a light frost... Watch this space as areas see their hottest weather of the year (US South), but in northern areas as though cool Candian cold front swing through the Northern tier, when skies are clear and calm, lows will begin to fall through the 40s and 30s over the Northern Rockies, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the interior Lakes as well as New England... the air cools as nights and time under darkness grows....

Mumbai Lake levels at 80.6%.

As on yesterday,13th.August, the lakes supplying water to Mumbai, all included, had an overall storage stock of 10.48 lmlitres, against a full storage capacity of 13.0 mllitres. That is, the overall storage is now at 80.6%.

Last year, on this date the storage was 7.30 mllitres. Working out to 56.3%.

Normally, Mumbai needs to be supplied, requires, 4300 mlitres/day. ( 0.04 mllitres, comparing with the above units). But even in normal times, the supply was restricted to 3450 mlitres (0.35 mllitres), as full supply.

The city, in the initial stages of the 2010 monsoon, in June, got 2900 mlitres (0.029 mllitres). Then it was raised to 3000 mlitres (0.03 mllitres), and yesterday, it was decided to further raise the supply to 3100 mlitres (0.031 mllitres).
