southeast & florida
After another blowtorch of a day yesterday, particularly for southern and western regions, Atlanta getting off with a much cooler 84! Today it looks as though temps increase for such places as Atlanta and Charlotte, whilst a cooldown though remaining extremely humid for New Orleans. An increase in thunderstorms today for particularly eastern areas including Georgia, All of Florida. But drier the further westwards you go today as high pressure that delivered two straight 100 degree days in New Orleans holds, though that high has slipped further west, increasing moisture levels, but thunderstorm chances remain low even in New Orleans. Highs today should warm uniformly into the low 90s, Atlanta 93 (PM storms), low 76, New Orleans 95-97 (mid-70 dew points), Low 82, Charleston 90 (PM storms), Low 79. Orlando 92 (PM storms), Low 76.
southern plains
Yet another extremely hot day in store after lows merely fall below 80 degrees. A hot unrelenting sun with highs again pushing 98-100 in Houston, 104-106 in Dallas, 102 for San Antonio and 90s for western Texas... Yep, it's the same old story folks! Lows tonight remain in the upper 70s to 80 everwhere, 60s for West Texas.
northern plains
Today will be marked by AM STORMS in Denver to Minneapolis, but PM storms more likely for eastern areas, particularly from Madison to Chicago to Detroit. Highs today will be a warm one with 87 but staying sunny up is Bismarck, ND, 92 with AM storms in Minneapolis and a steamy 89 for Chicago. Further south and you tap into the blowtorch. Kansas City to St Louis will warm to 100 or higher today, under strong sun. Take it easy! Lows remain mostly 70 or greater with the exceptions of the far north where it will drop into the 60s. 80 for KS to SL.
northeast & mid-atlantic
N/A
southwest

northwest

Weather Talk

VERY HOT AND HUMID ACROSS THE US MIDSECTION

It's become apparent that the heat is holding firmly over the Midsection of the US, shifting the goalposts further westwards from it's centerpoint in the Mid-Atlantic back during July.

Just take a look at the combination of the intense early August sun with 100-105 degree surface readings, note the 105 at Little Rock, 102 in Memphis and 102 in St Louis.. it's really the exceptional moisture in the air also that's making now the central portion of the country feel like a tropical island, dangling right on the equator... a true tropical rainforest! It feels like 112 in St Louis and 118 in Memphis, some spots likely seeing 80 degree dew points and 100+ heat, equalling 120+ plus realfeels! Dangerous to be outside right now!

For those in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, though you folks may see another batch of 90s, I think the worst is over for you now and the South and plains may remain hot, humid but as August wares on, the heat will begin to shrink and fall-like air will begin to swing into the Northern tier and Great Lakes by months end!
