PART 2
DESPITE AN OVERALL COLDER WINTER FOR CANADA, NORTHERN AREAS ENDED THE SEASON ABOVE NORMAL WHILST SOUTHERN AREAS BELOW NORMAL!

Winter 2010-11 has been a north-south divide in temperature

YELLOWKNIFE, NWT

The city of Yellowknife, located way up in Canada's northwest corner, though it was cold, it's meant to be here and despite a frigid highs as low as -34C and a minimum as chilly as -41C during December, the month still ended a fraction above montly averages at +0.7C.

January, 2011 actually averaged a fraction below normal in Yellowknife but February ended, like December above normal by a full 1.8C or 3.3F.

INUVIK, NWT
Despite December ending a full 2.8C below normal and lows falling to -37C, promises of a tough winter looked likely, however January closed at a warm 2C above normal even though lows fell to as cold as -41C, remember, the 'average' low falls to -31C. It's located far enough north that there's little daylight and the village is surrounded by snow and ice for hundreds, if not thousands of miles! February didn't bring a particularly cold month either with lows bottoming out at a less cold -37C which isn't far off the average low of -31C. The month actually ended warmer than January at +5.1C or +9F.

BAKER LAKE, NUNAVUT

A December minimum may appear cold at -35C in December, 2010 but the average low by the end of the month is -30C, the month ended a warm 8.1 degrees C above normal or 14.5 above in F.

As for January where the average low bottoms out at a seasonal minimum of -33C, Baker Lake saw a high only reach -34.1C, colder than the average low and a low one particular night hit -44.6C, however, despite these chilly numbers, January, 2011 averaged out a full 5.1C above normal or 9.1F.

Even February didn't see even an average month temperaturewise despite a chilly low of -41C, the month closed at over 2C above normal.

Baker Lake is located in the heart of frozen north-central Canada, not far south of the Arctic Circle...

Southern tier of Canada was'nt warm overall like it's northern neighbours  as compared to normal!

As for areas of Canada, once into northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec southwards, winter was colder than normal overall as compared with areas further north into the Canadian Arctic.

FORT MCMURRAY, ALBERTA

Even in areas, not far south of the above normal areas, far northern Alberta's, Fort McMurray December's average was 1.4 below normal or -2.6F with the exact same value below normal for January where the lowest reading hit -38.9C, the lowest average low for Fort McMurray is -23C. As for February well it was also colder than normal at -1.7C or -3F below normal.

EDMONTON, ALBERTA

Further south and into central Alberta, Edmonton averaged a full 4.5C below normal with a December minimum of -29.5C with no high during the month above freezing. The average high and low is -7C and -18C at the close of the month. As for January 2011, well there was a high during the month as cold as -23C and a low of -39.8C but with high's above freezing andf a maximum as warm as 6.1C, though it was below normal overall, it was'nt as chilly as December at -0.3C, likely thanks to above freezing highs. The average high nd low at the coldest period is -8C and -19C and this occurs for only 1.5 days at around Jan 14-15th.

During February, though there was another day at 6C, the month overall ended colder, like December with -3.9C. There was high's as cold as -21C on two days and nights as cold as -36.8C.

CALGARY, ALBERTA

In southern Alberta, the city of Calgary saw a December of 2011 3C below normal, January was less below normal, but nontheless, below normal at -0.7C and February averaged a colder -3.6C. The monthly minimums were -27C for December, -29.4C for January and -28C for February and the coldest daytime highs were -15C, -21C and -20C.

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN

December averaged a chilly 2C below normal with high's as cold as -20C and lows down to -27C, the December average is -10.6C and -20.6C.

As for January, 2011, Regina (located in southern Saskatchewan), the month averall was actually 1.4C above normal but there was a period of abnormally mild weather where highs reached freezing, bare in mind, the average high here is a frigid -12.8C and the average low -22.8C! Though most days only warmed to slightly below normal territory of -16 to -18C, the final day of the month saw a high of -28.5C. The lowest night reading was -36C.

February ended 0.3C below normal with actually the coldest low of the winter with -37C, the coldest high was -23.4C but a high during the month soared to 5.7C within a streak of 4 days above freezing with nights during that period only falling to -8C.
