THE NASTY SIDE TO SPRING...
Winter Return's to Northeast with vengence after last Friday's tease of upper 70s to 80 degrees!

An amazing 8" snow dumping at Sparta, New Jersey whilst morning to midday windchills in New York City is an icy 29 degrees with a cold high expected to only reach 39 degrees! Normal is 52 and this is in stark contrast to last Friday's record tying 77 degree high at Central Park.

We are seeing a complete flip this week from what we saw last week across a broad area from the central Plains, Midwest and Northeast. Whilst temperatures warmed to record levels late last week with highs as warm as 80 degrees at Newark, NJ, 80 degrees at Pottstown, PA, 77 at Central Park, New York and 76 degrees at Atlantic City, today it's winter again for this very region and unfortunatelt, that's the reality to spring in this part of the world.

Heavy snow has brought nasty travel conditions and as much as 8 to 10 inches across areas of PA, northwest Jersey, areas just north of New York City as well as New England.

Sharp Temperature Contrast from North to south!

It's that time of year when temperatures are warming into the 70s and 80s with ease across the Southern tier but to the north, say from Nebraska on northwards, winter is rarely over yet, despite periods of warmth. That is most certainly the case today as cold air is driving southwards at the same time warm, moist air from the tropics is pushing north. The converging factor of these largely contrasting air masses coming together over the American heartland at this stage in the year is thanks to the parade of west-east moving Pacific storm systems. As these circulations get east of the Rockies, they tend to then pull up that warm Gulf air as well as pull colder, drier air south from the Canadian Prairies, ultimately intensifying the circulation and often enhancing snowfall and wind in the cold backside as well as forcing nastier severe weather to breakout in the warm, front running region ahead of the approaching cold front. Areas to the east of the cold front will enjoy above normal temperatures and once the cold front swings through, it quickly goes from above normal to below normal, often resulting in snowfall.

This afternoon and throughout the course of this current pattern, the warm sector will be the harness in producing severe weather, often with tornadoes forming, whilst on the backside as the moisture pulls up and around the circulation and enters the much colder environment on it's backside, heavy snows will break out. That is what we're seeing with today's system as upwards of 6 to 12 inches has fallen on the Northern Plains and south-central Canada as well as across the Lakes and into the Northeast with even New York City enduring snow yet again!

Mark Vogan's March, 2011 Vacation to New Jersey and Tri-State Area
Part 2

After a couple of rainy days and a Monday high of 45 degrees in Central Park, NY, the sun returned and throughout the week temperatures climbed nicely with 50 degrees on the Tuesday, 65 degrees by St Patrick's Day (Thursday) and then 77 degrees on the Friday. This rapid climb was courtesy of not only the eastwards movment of the high well south of New York which brought those warming southwest winds but because a cold front was fast approaching from the west, these winds accelerated and thus stronger warming at the surface was achieved.

 VAGARIES OF THE WEATHER
INDIA & SUB-CONTINENTAL ASIA WEATHER
BY RAJESH KAPADIA

WORLD METEOROLOGICAL DAY - 23rd. March 2011

This was the day map on WMDay for the sub-continent. Far better than last week. With 40c as the highest for the day.

Possibility of a low in the bay was mentioned in Vagaries. Let's name it B1, it should form around the Bay Islands around Saturday, 26th. March. But, as mentioned earlier, do not expect this to deepen beyond 1004 mb, leave alone effecting the Indian mainland.

Should move a bit NE initially, say on the 27th/28th, due to the passing of M3. But as M3 is too far North, and feeble, B1 will again turn North, and fizzle out before the 29th.

Yes, I have not mentioned it yet, but M3 is coming by Saturay, but will be feeble, and in the Northern parts of Kashmir.

Effect on Pakistan, also on Saturday, will be restrictd to the Northern most regions. M3, weakened and scattered, should slide into western and pockets of central Nepal on Sunday, 27th. March.

The weather chart on Thursday shows a line of wind discontinuity (where wind in opp.directions meet) running across the East-Central India region.

Caused by heating, this line produces some clouding along its run.

Could forecast some rainfall next 2 days, Friday/Saturday, in western A.P. and Orissa and Chattisgarh. Cloudy weahter in Vidharbha and east M.P. till Saturday.

Nagpur can expect clouds till Saturday, and day high at 40c till this weekend. Then, 42c from Monday!

With clouds extending into Delhi, the days will be maintained at 36c till Saturday. Sunday, expect 38c !

In Pakistan, days are contained within 40c today in the hottest Sindh desert regions. And may not see any substantial rise, maybe 41/42c till Sunday.

For Karachi, Westerly winds will continue till Sunday, keeping the day within 35/36c.

Islamabad, as mentioned before continues to be pleaant with the day not going above 30c. and will continue with this range till Sunday, with maybe some light shower on Saturday.

For Nepal, I have mentioned some rain slipping into the country on Sunday. Kathmandu too can get upto 5 mms of rain on Sunday. Day night range till Saturday will be between 30- 13c , and day will be a bit lower on Sunday.
