WEATHER TALK

DESPITE AN OVERALL COLDER WINTER FOR CANADA, NORTHERN AREAS ENDED THE SEASON ABOVE NORMAL WHILST SOUTHERN AREAS BELOW NORMAL!

YELLOWKNIFE, NWT

The city of Yellowknife, located way up in Canada's northwest corner, though it was cold, it's meant to be here and despite a frigid highs as low as -34C and a minimum as chilly as -41C during December, the month still ended a fraction above montly averages at +0.7C.

January, 2011 actually averaged a fraction below normal in Yellowknife but February ended, like December above normal by a full 1.8C or 3.3F.

INUVIK, NWT

Despite December ending a full 2.8C below normal and lows falling to -37C, promises of a tough winter looked likely, however January closed at a warm 2C above normal even though lows fell to as cold as -41C, remember, the 'average' low falls to -31C. It's located far enough north that there's little daylight and the village is surrounded by snow and ice for hundreds, if not thousands of miles! February didn't bring a particularly cold month either with lows bottoming out at a less cold -37C which isn't far off the average low of -31C. The month actually ended warmer than January at +5.1C or +9F.

BAKER LAKE, NUNAVUT

A December minimum may appear cold at -35C in December, 2010 but the average low by the end of the month is -30C, the month ended a warm 8.1 degrees C above normal or 14.5 above in F.

As for January where the average low bottoms out at a seasonal minimum of -33C, Baker Lake saw a high only reach -34.1C, colder than the average low and a low one particular night hit -44.6C, however, despite these chilly numbers, January, 2011 averaged out a full 5.1C above normal or 9.1F.

Even February didn't see even an average month temperaturewise despite a chilly low of -41C, the month closed at over 2C above normal.

Baker Lake is located in the heart of frozen north-central Canada, not far south of the Arctic Circle...
