FROM FLOOD TO FROST
After the torrential rains of yesterday and the departure of the low spun of nippy winds from the north, the air feels MUCH cooler as the actual departing low itself is responsible is presenting us with a high liklihood of frost over a large area of Central Scotland tonight with skies clear, winds light and a day which saw little in the way of warming. The fact that my high here in Lennoxtown was a mere 55 and a 10.40am reading of only 50 degrees suggested, the air aloft is very cold indeed and this was trasnsported down on the backside of the very low that brought us flooding to many areas of the country yesterday.
Tonight is likely to see lows creep easily into the 30s and may take a run at our first "freezing temperature" since early May, that was the last time I recorded a sub-freezing low which was 30 degrees.
Tonight I expect areas under a clear sky to uniformly drop towards the 35 degree mark but some sheltered areas (in valleys) even within the Central Belt between Glasgow and Edinburgh which hit freezing, 32 degrees (0C) with frost forming in many areas. My own low, I expect to hit 33 or 34 degrees whilst sheltered Glens to the north may shiver and actually fall into the 20s for the first time since spring, that's -2 or -3C. But it depends on how little the wind blows, if it remains near calm and skies remain clear, that is a high possibility indeed..
DROUGHT-LIKE CONDITIONS OVER EASTERN US AIDING IN SUPPORTING VERY HOT WEATHER FOR MID-ATLANTIC AND NORTHEASTERN USA
With an already record or near record hot summer for many areas stretching from the Carolinas and Virginias to New England, the heat and humidity now re-entering the region only illustrates more the type of "stuck pattern" we've seen this summer. With record number of days above 90 and the fact that we're going to see 90s stretch all the way through New York City and perhaps even Connecticut today, the dryness of the soils throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast is helping keep those temperatures much hotter than they otherwise would be for so late in the year.
Highs from DC to Baltimore and Philadelphia will likely top the mid 90s across that region with perhaps upper 90s (97-98 degrees) for the Greater DC and Baltimore areas, that is unprecidented heat for so late in September and I'm sure folks in this particular region will be looking forward to fall and winter.
It really has been a year of extremes.... with DC, Baltimore and Philly enduring their snowiest winter on record and now their hottest summer, what will this winter bring?
Look for highs to top 90 all the way to NYC this afternoon!!! Lows tonight may fail to get below 75 in DC, Baltimore and Philly... amazingly warm for this time of year!

TODAY'S COND
Despite a wind blowing throughout the night, it was from the north and was transporting colder air from a more northerly latitude (Arctic) and thus brought the nighttime low to 47 degrees. The wind combined the 40s made for a downright wintry feel the the air even this morning and despite mostly sunny skies, even at 10.40am my temperaure remained at a mere 51 and actually fell back to 50 before struggling to a mere 55 degree high. The sunshine and such a low daytime high for only September, illustrates the much colder air that has arrived thanks to the departure of the low yesterday... Tonight will be the coldest night since early May when the temperature here at my house dropped to 30 degrees. I do expect a low to take a run at 32 degrees by tomorrow morning, therefore frost is highly likely to form during the overnight tonight.
Thanks for reading.
-Mark
