May 2011 Heatwave Gets Cranking!
From the Central Plains to Eastern Seaboard, It's time to get the sunscreen, shorts and BBQ's lit because summer has arrived....
As you'll have noticed over the past couple of days now, it's getting warmer and warmer and today will be darn hot and sticky throughout the Eastern third. If you've got outdoor plans with friends and family, be sure to use sunscreen and protect your skin, cause your gonna need it as that sun is going to really penetrate the ground and really heat up the air as the upper level ridge of high pressure expands and grows stronger. I do think, most areas from the Central Plains to just inland from the Atlantic Ocean, including the Major Cities from Washington to New York and perhaps even up to Boston should get to 90 degrees. The DC to Philadelphia section of the I-95 corridor may push 93 to 95 degrees today. Heat Indexes will make it feel even warmer out there.

Severe Weather Threat shifts north, Northern Plains in firing line today!
AREA AT RISK THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING: NORTH & SOUTH DAKOTA, MINNESOTA
The strength of the upper level ridge to the east of the Rockies will force the storm system down into the western trough and will be then forced northeastwards up into the Dakotas and Minnesota around the large stone in the flow (that's the powerful high). This is true evidence that the atmosphere is now finally adjusting to a summer-like regime where high's become stronger, large and more dominant. Up until now we simply haven't had that high that can dictate a pattern.
The cold air drilling southeast and the heat and humidity flowing freely due north from the central and southern plains will create a fight zone for powerful thunderstorm development this afternoon and tonight with the greatest risk of tornadoes after 4 or 5pm across the Dakotas and Minnesota.
From the Rockies west to Pacific Coast, it's cold, rainy and even snowy!
If you live out West, the contrast between you guys and folks living to the east of the Rocky Mountains couldn't be greater. Yet another storm system rides and deepens the trough over the West, reinforcing the cold air in the upper levels across the West. This is pulling Pacific moisture in and with that upper energy, you've got low elevation rains, plenty of clouds and fairly windy conditions and some plentiful snows in the mid to high elevation mountains. There has been some sizeable amounts of snowfall over the Wyoming and Colorado mountains into this morning despite the fact it's now May 30th.

Update: Baltimore's BWI Airport soared to a record smashing 98 degrees, Georgetown, Delaware topped a record 95 degrees. Philadelphia, PA and Milleville, NJ reached 93 degrees.
TODAY'S WEATHER ACROSS UK & EUROPE By Mark Vogan
I am forecasting areas of England to reach 32C or higher and areas of Scotland to reach 25C or higher by Friday through Saturday
Over the next 24 to 36 hours we are going to see yet another trough and cold pocket of air in the upper levels of the atmosphere dive south from the UK and into France and towards the Alps. Now, as this cold air progresses quickly south, southeast, it meets the very warm to hot air stationed currently across France and Germany. We all know what happens when these two air masses meet one another. Strong thunderstorms will blow up tomorrow over a large portion of France and into the west of Germany. Further south we have heavy, thundery downpours spreading into the Alps of Austria and Switzerland just like we saw late last week and in the higher reaches of the Alps we may be looking at heavy snowfall!
To the east of the southward moving trough, much of central Germany on east to Moscow, Russia is enjoying some very warm, even hot conditions with daytime highs soaring towards 26 to 30C as the high remains strong and dominant.
As for the UK, well warmth will continue across central and southern England and frequent showers, some of which will be heavy and thundery with hail across Scotland.
By the time we reach Wednesday, well that's where we see the changes taking place. The trough now pushing south towards France will continue heading south, eventually detaching itself from the main westerly flow. By doing so, this will spin away all by itself over Spain by Wednesday into Thursday at the same time high pressure builds north, around this detached upper low that will bring clouds, frequent showers and cool temperatures to Spain.
According to the models. The high will remain strong across Germany eastwards through Poland, the Ukraine and into western Russia bringing lots of hot sunshine. The high looks set to even rebuild across France as the upper low sits to the south over Spain. The ridge then builds over top of Great Britain with the way the European model continuing to suggest substantial warmth by late week. I hold to the idea that central and southern England could be looking at the hottest temperatures since 2009 or perhaps even 2008. London could top 32C or 90F, hotter than anytime last year, while Scotland's interior may soar towards 26 or 27C by Friday and or Saturday!

Lennox Castle is located in nearby Lennox Forest which can be seen from my house looking southwest. My wife and I decided to take our bikes up there today and take a closer look at the historic site of Lennox Castle and its remains.
