Special Story By Mark Vogan
COLD START TO MAY 3RD ACROSS CENTRAL SCOTLAND!

Considering it's May 3rd and daylight remains in the sky here until 10.45PM ( the height of summer, it remains in the sky ALL night, when clear) and returns as early as 4.10AM now, there is a very short window for any sort of radiational cooling at this late stage in the spring. However, when you find yourself under a very cold pocket of air aloft and the cooling process begins around 8pm after a day in which the high only tops a mere 49 degrees, you find yourself in for one of those unusually cold nights... Here it dropped into the low 40s by 8pm when the sun was still well above the horizon, this cooling was allowed simply because of just how cold the air aloft is. Eventually when that sun finally fell below the horizon after 9pm, the true cooling process was allowed to begin, bearing in mind, back in March, the cooling process can begin at 5 or 6pm, not 9.30pm. By 10.40pm a glimmer of daylight was still present over the Campsie Hills to my north and west, as well as tiny pockets of snow STILL, yes snow in the sheltered parts of the hillside! Never seen this late before, said my neighbour yesterday afternoon whilst he cut the grass and I was planting and weeding my own garden.

During the overnight here, skies were very clear, calm and the cold air aloft was able to work it's way down to the surface under clear, calm skies and sinking of air (cold air is of course denser than warm air) therefore it managed to work it's way to the surface and produced frost formation on cars as early as 10.45pm as seen on my wife's car at that time... This was at the time my thermometer still read 41 degrees. During the short hours of overnight darkness temps dropped through the 30s and fell to an impressively chilly 30 degrees which allowed a pretty harsh frost to form on not only cars, but grassy surfaces, my garden furnature and my two palms.Even the 1-2 inche deep rain water accummulated in my BBQ was frozen solid.

Here is a selection of photos I took this morning at 7am.

My car roof with "hairy frost formation" and frozen rain drops from yesterdays rain and hail showers, note the fully-leaved tree under the clear, blue skies!
Large water droplets from yesterday's rain frozen solid on my car!
My front lawn, freshly cut just yesterday has a decent frost cover!
My wife's car with a thick frost on it!

Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

It's been all about the Tennessee Floods and Northeast/East Heat

The USA has seen summer hit bigtime over the East after it's crossing of the Plains several days ago and now it's squeeze along the East Coast as the front that created havoc with floods over Tennessee during the weekend now roars thunderstorms fed now by the very heat and humidity that brought summer to the East Coast this weekend. The big cities from DC to New York City are enduring 80s with skies darkeneing and rains pouring, lightening lacing the skies and winds that could rip tree limbs off and rattle street signage and traffic signals as the front lights with as the warmth really allows the atmosphere to bubble up.

Warmer air will flurish into the southern plains this week as a high builds across Mexico and pumps a fresh push of hot, air north and east, meanwhile a new storm will roll off the Pacific and into the Pacific Northwest.

The British Isles remains cool

The cool weather continues for the UK but I believe late this week we may see warmer air but not quite as warm as it could be this time of year (southern part of UK mid-60s, northern half, upper 50s to around 60), . The trough lingering over NW Europe will remain in place but the very cold air we have endured this weekend in particular appears to been loosing it's grip to the seasonal advance and warmer air trying it's best to push north, towards us.... The low of 30 degrees found here at my house looks like it's the coldest we'll get until next fall, as for May 3rd, that was a very impressive low for this time of year where frost was significant for sure (see my video of this morning's frost HERE)...

Check back to "Weather Talk" as I intend to discuss regularly the UK forecast...
