Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

From winter to summer in May alone, Peter Gibbs says "some places may top 82 degrees!". Exactly the same figure I forecast last Sunday!!

Within 10 days we shall have witnessed snow and biting north winds to shorts and t-shirts weather as places that struggled to reach 10C (50F) will be knocking on the door of 27-28C or 80-82F tomorrow and into this weekend.

Thanks to a massive turn, perhaps one of the largest flips not only in a May for the UK but for pretty much any month in many many years may be about to occur. I remember well reports of light dustings of snow on the Campsies just back on May 12th. Snow reports in Newcastle, the tops of the Pennines, the Highlands and other spots. I recall witnessing snow flakes flying myself at less than 800 ft. Yet tomorrow will see highs top 70 degrees in Scotland for the first time since last September or perhaps earlier.. For portions of England for Manchester on south to the south coast will see temperatures rocket to anywhere from low 70s to upper 70s with a possibility of somewhere reaching 80 degrees (27C).

Why the heat all of a sudden?

Well over the past 48 hours, we've seen winds turn on Mon-Tues from a west to southwest direction. Once that wind began turning more to a southwest direction, this allowed warmer air to begin it's journey from the warmer climes of the Azores and Canaries, all the way up to Britain. As the past 48 hours have progressed. Pressures have risen all the time as winds continue feeding warm air north. The actual high pressure ceell has also poushed north as well as winds transporting it north and thus allowing the sun to release hotter rays to the surface of Britain.

Even under a cloud canopy, temps have become markedly warmer and indeed the actual cloud cover and it's moisture within has meant the combo of that moisture and warmer air, has made for a somewhat more humid, muggier feel. Something NONE of us are used to unless you've just arrived from India or the American South, which in that case you'd find "cold".

The key to the next few days being warmest of all is thanks to the actual high pressure core being closest to the UK. Southern Britain will be under the high pressure more and thus allowing clouds to burn (for most places across interior Britain) and thus stronger direct solar rays and no clouds to keep the strongest rays out... Therefore it's likely we see at least 70 tomorroe for Glasgow as stronger pressure heights and less cloud and fog will allow us to hit the benchmark 70-degree high and quite possibly warm to even 73-75 if there's enough sunshine and minimal cloud. For Manchester and interior south of England may see 80 tomorrow and let me just say, that exact figure is what I've forecasted since last weekend! Peter Gibbs of the BBC stated this in his forecast earlier, that somewhere might top 28C!!

Stay tuned and stay cool!
