Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

The Cold of May to be followed by a steady warming into June and July

I've enjoyed a week off work and took a trip down to Oxfordshire in south-central England... A region that enjoyed 70s just days before I travelled down there, I headed south only to find a cold wind and a high only in the 50s. It felt more like March than May to be honest with and with a breeze here it remained frost-free but that was not the case just south of the border where skies were clear and winds light enough for frost to form of roofing and grassy surfaces, by the time we stopped for a toilet stop in the north of England, frost was present and a breeze was picking up making it feel downright cold.. Interestingly the morning before (Mon) we hit 30 degrees or -1C here at the house with a significant frost and even the water laying in my BBQ was frozen solid.

Remaining Cold & Unsettled across most of Western Europe, including Spain, Eastern Europe is where the heat is

If we Brits think it's cold, we're not along, our neighbours further south and east of us across France, the Netherlands, Belgium and even as far south as Spain are seeing well below normal temps as the huge pocket of cold air aloft has drapped it's way all the way down into central, even southern Spain, portions of the Med are cool and rainy and temps are nothing to write home about over central Europe as this trough is dominant and may remain so for another 5-10 days at least. Rains and wind are progressing across southern and central Spain whilst up here across the British Isles, the highs are barely topping 10C with many eastern Scotland and English counties failing to top 8C on a easterly wind exposed coast, higher ground across northern Scotland may see snow showers! and back, last weekend whilst travelling through southern Scotland, some peaks in Dumfries and Galloway has a fresh coating of snow on them, these peaks only topping between 2,000-2,500ft above sea level. Thus illustrating just how cold this air aloft is and how it really isn't terribly high above our heads.

In order to experience true warmth at the moment, we must head to eastern Europe and Middle East where high pressure and real heat is getting pushed out of the typical hot zone of the Middle East deserts, the desert feeds to stronger pressure heights and warmer surface temps. The Canary Islands off Morrocco is now warming nicely with abundant sun, cooling sea breezes and highs now topping the upper 20s. Coastal North Africa (Med coast) is still pretty cool, one must head south and into the Sahara for 30s and low 40s, northeast Africa however is hotter with Cairo seeing typical upper 30s to around 40C.... It's still early of course and likely a month from now, heat and high pressure will dominate a much greater area, including the UK also.

NEW: Your Local Weather Forecasts
Mother's Day looking high and dry!
WWLTV NEW ORLEANS Here
Updated today at 12:48 PM

A pretty quiet weather pattern will continue through the weekend. After a Friday filled with partial sunshine and highs in the mid 80s to around 90°, a moisture-starved cold front will cross through Southeastern Louisiana and Coastal Mississippi Friday night and Saturday. Temperatures Friday night, under a few extra clouds with humidity and just a 10% chance of a late night shower, will drop to right around 70°. Both Saturday and Mom's Day will be good-looking days with partial sunshine, lowered humidity, and slightly cooler highs near 80°. The only fly in the ointment is a very outside 10% chance of a shower or thunderstorm for the first half of the weekend as our cold front continues its slow progress through the area and out into the Gulf. Monday, we'll also see relatively low humidity and partly cloudy skies hold in, but highs will recover back into the warmer mid 80s. Mid-week, as the Gulf opens up once again, summertime humidity will return in full-force with highs reaching back closer to 90° and the chance for a pop-up shower or storm.
