TODAY'S WEATHER ACROSS AMERICA By Mark Vogan
Light at the end of a very gloomy, wet tunnel for Northeast, but still a bit to go
Stubborn low to finally kick off the coast by Saturday!
With you folks in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast that are desperate to see the back of this damp, dreary pattern which has and is providing sunshine between, will finally pull off the coast. It looks like this may be Saturday or at the latest Sunday, so hang in there.
The problem has been, that we've seen this upper low detached from the main upper flow and thus it has been merely spinning away all by itself. The orientation of the jet has been flowing down and around the under side of this pesky low and flowing due north up it's right side. This has meant the low couldn't go anywhere as the jet stream itself closed the door to an Atlantic departure. Another problem has been that we've seen, because the jet stream has been flowing more or less due north off the East Coast and around this low, enhancement and continue to see enhancement of these showers because of a tropical connection steming all the way up from the western Caribbean Sea. Tropical Moisture has been flowing north and turning NW directly in the Northeast because of the orientation of the jet.
Now that drier air is wrapping into the upper low, we're seeing more sunshine in between those showers. The problem is that with those strong mid-May solar rays reaching the surface and heating the air, this is instigating some pretty lively thunderstorms over the interior Northeast today and some may turn severe through this afternoon and into tonight.
The low will eventually pull away and a high will slide into the region from the west, providing a much earned break from all the rain and unsettled, cool weather. Temperatures that have been stuck in the 60s for most will finally rise well into the 70s by Saturday with many folks, particularly over the Mid-Atlantic from Richmond to Philly perhaps topping 80 degrees.
Severe Weather once again eyeing Southern plains as storm drops in
A new and the latest storm system push into the West, across the Rockies and into the Southern Plains will once again deepen the western trough and bring a cold front out onto the plains of Texas and Oklahoma tomorrow. Low dew points behind the front, high dew points ahead of it will along with a substantial thermal contrast force the development of strong to severe thunderstorms over the western and central Southern Plains tomorrow (Thursday).
The same will go for Friday with a slightly further east position of the cold front. A moisture rich and warm southerly flow ahead of the front will once again provide all the very ingredients for bouyant air to be forced to rise up into the very colder upper levels induced by the upper low above, creating day 2 of a Southern Plains Severe Weather Outbreak.
The actual low which will be NW of the front will produce heavy mountain snows in the central Rockies.
TODAY'S WEATHER ACROSS UK & EUROPE By Mark Vogan
Strong winds blow across northern UK with Mtn Snows, Big Warm-Up over much of mainland Europe
The effects of a strong upper low NW of Scotland is currently bringing large impacts across Scotland. Winds have been steadily increasing through today and with a cooler mid to upper level atmosphere, snow, not rain is falling at Munro-level over the central and northern Highlands above 3,000 feet.
Tightly packed isobars showing well the strong west flow racing in at all levels of the atmosphere off the N. Atlantic and into Scotland/north of England is pulling regular showers in, some of which torrential and with hail and thunder accompanying them.
Two upper lows, 1) off the southwest coast of Portugal and 2nd centered in between Italy and Greece have intensified and this is providing enhanced showers and thunderstorms over much of Iberia and across southern Italy, across Greece and eastwards into Turkey.
High pressure however is built around these upper lows and providing the majority of the mainland with very warm, sunny weather. Highs will be uniformly in the 24-32C range.
As you can see from the above map for Friday, according to the European model, the trough will deepen over the UK, providing continued unsettled very showery cool weather across Scotland and this will be extended further south down into the far south of England where over recent days it has been milder with less hefty showers.
The upper low currently off SW Iberia will drift east, possibly weakening in the process. With a reduced chance of thunderstorm development over Spain and Portugal, temperatures may return to the low 30s C than over recent days. We may in fact see some of the warmest reading yet of 2011 centered between Seville and Madrid with possibly 34 to 35C showing up.
The upper low also pulls away from south-central Europe, allowing high pressure to build in across Italy and Greece. Here too, inland temperatures may approach the mid-30s C and the upper low, well it will be positioned over Turkey, likely enhancing thunderstorm and mountain snow potential here. ALL OF MAINLAND EUROPE WILL AGAIN BE MOSTLY SUNNY WITH VERY WARM TEMPERATURES.
