AFTER A COLD, STORMY PAST 10 DAYS FOR SCOTLAND, MILD HIGH PRESSURE RETURNS BRINGING A TASTE OF SPRING, FINALLY!
While I've enjoyed glorious sunny days for the most over the past 10-days that I've stayed in New Jersey with yesterday by far being the warmest, record warm in fact, across the pond and back home in Scotland it's not been as good with windstorms, hail, driving rain and snow. There certainly has been quite the contrast between the Eastern US and Western Europe, however mild High Pressure is back in control across Great Britain and this will pump milder air northwards and present highs into the 10 to 13C range which is above normal for late March.
The milder and more settled pattern will hold through at least Tuesday and perhaps into late next week, however, it's still only March and as we progress towards April, it can be a turbulent transition from winter to summer, especially at this latitude and location in the Northern Hemisphere.
TEMPS PLUNGE FROM YESTERDAY'S RECORD 70s and 80s TO LOW 50s TODAY
Yesterday's High
It's already nearly noon and the temperature in New York is only 48 degrees. The high looks likely to merely touch 50 or 52 degrees, despite skies being just as sunny as yesterday. That's a huge difference and a shock to the system. It was the same across the Plains, Midwest and Ohio Valley thanks to a cold front sliding west to east, pushing out the warmth and bringing in a cool, Canada air flow.
Today, with a wind blowing out of the north, it will feel downright cold compared to the shorts and t-shirt weather of yesterday where highs topped a very warm 77 degrees at Central Park, New York, 76 at Philadelphia, Pa, 80 at Pottstown, Pa and even an 80 degree reading at Newark, NJ. All these readings either tied or broke the record high for the date. Those records before yesterday were in the 75 to 78 degree range.
Today's Forecast High's
The warmth of yesterday was brought into the I-95 corridor, making it feel more like June and not March was because of a high pressure system over the South which drifted east and off the Carolina coast, this allowed warming southwest winds to crank straight northeastward and up into the Northeast coastal plain from I-95 to the Atlantic Ocean, however, what forced stronger heating than expected was because of the presence of a cold front which was moving towards the Big Cities and this forced aceleration of those southwesterlies which further heated the air. Add in a little urban heating and you've got record tying or breaking warmth. Very impressive for late March and close to 25 to 30 degrees above normal.
