Mark Vogan predicts 100 degrees today for Washington, Baltimore and for the first time since August 2001, in Philadelphia

It's all about taking it EASY and staying in the shade between noon until 5pm if you can as the heat is on throughout the entire region from the Carolinas, Virginia all the way northeast into southern New England, the place to be for some sort of relief from the blast-furnace heat will be the coast where sea breezes should kick in and hold highs to the upper 80s along the Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, Long Island beaches. However head just inland perhaps as little as a mile or two and your likely to see highs reach the upper 90s with spots today making the century mark in such locales as Atlantic City, Newark, Del even at surprising locales that sit right beside the Atlantic Ocean. You may find that ocean side communities experience an onshiore breeze, whilst on the inland side of these coastal towns, a west wind is blowing the hot air from the interior, temperatures may vary by as much as 10-degrees within 1-2 miles!

As for the big cities I'm calling for 100 at Washington, Baltimore & Philadelphia, YES PHILADELPHIA which hasn't seen 100 since August 9, 2001. As for New York City, highs should top 100 at both Newark and LaGuardia which have lots of concrete and therefore is easier to see 100. Where it may not quite touch 100 yet is Central Park in Midtown Manhattan. I think a high of 97 will be had there today, but look out tomorrow or Wednesday! Up to Hartford, Conn, today should warm to 98 and Boston 96, though an easterly wind may kick in midafternoon either slowing down the heating process produced by a westerly wind or will cut it off completely, if that east wind doesn't kick in we may see highs push 98 to 99 even in Boston later this afternoon... Lows tonight range from the mid-70s from Boston to Hartford, 77-80 for the Greater New York area and around 80-81 from Philadelphia down to Washington DC.

southeast
A seasonably warm day with modest humidity across much of the Southeast today. It's a typical set-up with abundant sunshine and stable air over the interior, whilst it's hot, humidity with a chance of thunderstorms along the Gulf Coast and throughout Florida. Highs throughout have a small variation with 86 expected at New Orleans to 89 at Atlanta. Florida should see highs in the 85 to 90 degrees range with warmest inland. PM thunderstorm risk exists throughout the state. Lows tonight range from the mid-70s from Charlotte to Atlanta to Memphis. Upper 70s for the coastal areas.
northern plains & southern plains
It will be a less stormy day from the Northern Plains but the deep, moist pump remains strong throughout Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and even up to Chicago today. The Dakotas and Minnesota should enjoy more sunshine with highs ranging from 81 at Rapid City, upper 70s for North Dakota whilst the Twin Cities warms to 87 under mostly sunny skies. Chicago to St Louis has a chance of strong to even severe thunderstorms today with a high of 93 at St Louis to 91 at Chicago with high dew points into the uncomfortable 70s. Lows tonight range from 50s in the Dakotas to low and mid-70s further east and south where the air is juicier.
Storm chances remain in existence throughout Texas's interior whilst sunnier, drier weather resumes along the upper Texas coast and Houston with highs returning to around 90. Upper 80s are expected throughout central and northern Texas and Oklahoma, whilst upper 90s to low 100s will be had over the west Texas desert. Lows tonight will be in the 70s throughout the region.
southwest & northwest
A warmer day will be had throughout the entire west with highs pushing 70 at Seattle, 75 at Portland and upper 70s with abundant sunshine across the interior PNW.
As for the Great Basin lots of sun and 85 for Salt Lake City, 83 for Denver. The Deserts will see highs push to around 105 at both Las Vegas and Phoenix to 100 for the first time at El Paso in some time. Lows range from the 50s across the Northwest, 60s and low 70s across the Great Basin, 70s across the southwest with perhaps 80 for a low at both Las Vegas and Phoenix. Highs today should be in the 70s for the beaches, around 80 at the Civic Ctr in Los Angeles.

Weather Talk
By Mark Vogan

98 degrees at Central Park, Another 101 at Newark International.. Most places 100 tomorrow?

It was a scorcher today! Yet another 101 degrees reported at Newark Airport whilst it appears that Central Park in Midtown Manhattan reached at least 98 degrees and around 97-98 at Philadelphia. Baltimore in sitting currently at 99 so it will be interesting to see whether Baltimore reaches the century mark before the air commences it's slow cooldown at sunset.

I had a glance at dew points and from DC to New York and surrounding, it's only in the mid-50s which is relatively dry, therefore we should be able to see lows drop to perhaps 80 throughout the cities, HOWEVER over the next 48 hours, we are likely to see dew points creep into the 70s or at least upper 60s and with highs likely peaking tomorrow with an expected high of AT LEAST 100 from DC all the way to New York's Central Park, lows may appraoch the warmest ever highest minimum values on record as I do expect by Wednesday night into Thursday morning some spots to only fall to around 85 degrees for the LOW!

forecast highs for tomorrow:

Washington DC 102
Baltimore 102
Philadelphia 102
Newark 104
Central Park 100
