HOT ACROSS SOUTHWEST AND CENTRAL EUROPE, CHANGES FROM UNSETTLED AND COOL PATTERN LOOKING MORE LIKELY ACROSS SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN IRELAND AT THE LATER OF JULY AND AUGUST

A huge upper ridge has dominated southwest Europe and throughout central Europe with temperatures that have pushed 100 from Madrid to central Europe. Mid-90s have baked an abnormally dry France and near 90 in an increasingly dry southern Great Britain. Remember though it has become wetter in Scotland and northern England, there is still abnormally dry soils from Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire and the borders. The Lake District of northwest England is now under a hosepipe ban and those caught using a hosepipe to water lawns can be found upwards of £1,000. The northwest of the UK has been under the influence of a large trough over the North Atlantic and this has been drawing persistently cooler, wetter, marine air across Northern Ireland and Scotland, an air flow out of the northwest and north, but south of the jet stream which has been flowing at around 30,000ft over northern England, but south of Preston, Lancashire, it's been warmer, more humid air flowing out of the southwest from the sub-tropics that has ruled. Between the two very different sources of air mass, the contrast has been nearly 40 degrees within just 400 or so miles.

Parts of Scotland have struggled to get above 55 degrees with afternoon readings of 56 or 13C with Glen Ogle in west-central Scotland seeing mid-afternoon temperatures of only 48 degrees or 8C at the same time it's 87-88 degrees at southeast London's Gravesend station. That is a large contrast for Britain.

With many areas of Scotland remaining dry, all it takes is seasonal advancements north of the jet, flowing over the Lakes and the dry to near drought conditions across southern Scotland and northern England will be once again used to provide a very warm period from Jul 20 through August and I believe the signs are there that the unsettled weather for Scotland and N.I will end and the ridge that's over Europe will expand west, allowing the high to push northwards and bring a hot second half of summer 2010 to ALL of Britain. 80s for Scotland and with better coverage of abnormally dry soils expanded south from the Lakes to Greater London, setting the stage to possibly a repeat of the sweltering August in 2003 in which Brogdale in Kent topped a national record high of 101 degrees... I do see 95 to 100 in London at some point in late July or early August... Glasgow and Edinburgh I also do still think will see a return to drier, warmer weather and a run at the upper 80s at some point within a warm spell of perhaps 10 days... "Averaging" 75 or so degrees.

Note in the map above, 90s for the Canary Islands off Morrocco.
