A WAR OF THE EXTREME!
From Drought to Deluge in Britain as month's worth of rain falls....

By Mark Vogan

It's all thanks to the trough over the northwest and the high over the southeast, in between it's meyhem as a tropical-like flow of deep moisture is firing up in the exact areas that saw the driest first 6 months of the year since records began. The heat and dry conditions of been persistent across southern Britain where they have enjoyed the flow of air off Africa and day after day of 80 degree plus warmth, whilst 90s have baked Paris and near or above 100 degree heat has baked Madrid. Even portions of the Netherlands have enjoyed persistent heat with low to mid-90s showing up acrioss into areas of the Netherlands and Belgium. It's certainly be hot across the interior of the continent with low to mid-90s almost the norm for Germany and Poland as well as known ice-boxes such as Moscow and across to Siberia... The same spots that saw one of their worst winters in living memory!

As for Scotland the Highlands struggled to top 53-54 degrees, low to mid-60s across the central belt or lowlands of Scotland as a dominant trough, stationed over the Northeast Atlantic has delivered stubbornly cool air as well as persisted bands or pulses of showers. As the heat over recent days has tried to nudge north, it's collided with the boundary which seperates the warm from the cooler air, this has sent sub-tropical Atlantic air NE, running inbetween, carried below a jet stream at the 30,000ft level, dyanmics of surface heating below the boundary and the abnormally cold air rushing overtop, has brought LONG-LIVED tropical-like downpours for places from Liverpool, Kendal all the way to Glasgow and across to Perth which was under water yesterday!!

London and across the Channel to portions of mainland NW Europe from Gronigen, Holland all the way south to Madris have seen the influence of a SE bound trough, that trough that's bullied Scotland in poor, dissapointing summer weather and it pressing the same Scottish air into the areas that have seen 10-20 degree above normal temps.. we have seen 5-10 degree drops with Paris the largest that I can see with 18 degrees off the previous 24 hours... FURTHER drops will happen with Madrid likely failing to reach 80 over the weekend with showers likely. Could we see floods in northern France as the boundary that's impacted central Britain pushes southeast... Indeed one must remember that in mid-July, fronts weaken the further south they go and therefore this frontal bounadry is likely to dissipate at some point over interior Western Europe and simply bounce back, leaving central and eastern Germany remaining in the heat!

It appears UK, France, Spain and the Low counties will see a return to abnormal warmth and dry conditions come the mid point of NEXT week!

Today and tomorrow is going to be the hottest few days of this current "ramp up in temps" in what has been a hot, steamy summer anyway. Instead of 88-91 across most of the region, it's going to be 94-97 by day and 75-78 by night, pretty much anywhere inland from the Gulf Coast as the big H sits directly over NW Georgia. Thunderstorm development areas today will be few and far between with perhaps pockets forming in far north Georgia, the Carolinas and to the west over SE Texas and even the odd isolated storms over the Gulf coast area, but it's more likely that skies remain mostly sunny and this will allow that sun to beat down, heating the surface and warming the air into the mid to upper 90s. I expect a high of 96 in Memphis (low 78), 92 in New Orleans (Low 81), 97 in Montgomery, 95 in Atlanta (Low 76) with a chance of PM storms), 94 in Charlotte (Low 78) with chance of PM storms. Today should be another with few and far between thunderstorms and mostly sunny skies should dominate north to south with highs generally topping 90-94 with immediate coastal areas around 89. Lows tonight will range from 77 inland to 82 on the beach.
northeast & mid-atlantic
Today will see hot, sunny weather with highs slowly climbing to what could be another blowtorch of a day on Saturday, a potential one-day repeat of early July when 103 degrees was achieved at Philly and Central Park, NY. As for today, highs will top around 94 in both the Washington DC and Baltimore areas, 92 in Philadelphia and around 90-91 across the New York City area, with possibly a 92-94 in Newark, NJ. Thankfully the storms we saw yesterday, won't happen today, in fact skies may be near clear from Virginia to New England with only some fair weather cumulus poping up, but that will be all... Lows tonight will drop to the upper 60s for rural areas, mid to upper 70s across and within the major metro areas.
southwest
A relatively cool day for coastal California and even the LA Basin as highs merely top the mid-70s in downtown. It's back to average for the deserts with Palm Springs warming to around 105, as well as both Phoenix and Las Vegas, amking the still abundantly sunny skies, less unbearable, Across the Great Basin it will be sunny and still warm with Reno touching 97 whilst Salt Lake reaches 93. Lows tonight will be in the 60s across the Basin, 40s and 50s for high elevation, 80s for the low deserts, 70s for the high deserts, 60s from coastal valleys to Basin, upper 50s at the beach.
northwest
Cooler conditions will be had for coastal areas with highs only in the 60s for Seattle, low 70s for Portland, however east of the mountains much warmer air will be has with 80s and even 90s across the PNW interior. Showers and storms as well as lower temps will be found over Montana and the Northern Rockies with highs in the low 70s to low 80s. Lows range from 50s at the coast, 30s and 40s for the mtns, 50s and 60s east of the mtns.
northern plains
A return to the cooler, stormier set up throughout the Northern tier with warmest conditions restricted down to Chicago. From Williston, ND to Rochester, MN it's thunderstorms likely and highs ranging from low 70s to upper 70s, inc Minneapolis. As for Chicago, despite an 85 degree high, thunderstorms are likely too, making it a little dissapointing, though we may see sunshine for longer periods of the day today there. The biggest thing will be how muggy the air feel, we are likely seeing a day in which it "feels like" the mid, even upper 90s as the dew point rockets towards the mid-70s!!. Further south and Kansas City east to St Louis will be somewhat uncomfortable to walk around in today as dew points run into the mid, even upper 70s and combine this with heat building to around 95, it's going to feel close to 110 in both SL and KS.... Lows range from 50s across the north to around 80 in the south tonight.
southern plains
Ever get tired of the same thing too many times? It's like a broken record across Texas and this forecast today, like recent days is simple. HOT IN THE NORTH, COOLER AND STORMIER BUT MORE HUMID IN THE SOUTH... Temps will push the mid to upper 90s from Dallas to Oklahoma City, across to west-central Texas. Further south and the surge of humid air and 90 degree heat will broil thunderstorms up this afternoon from Houston to San Antonio, south to Brownsville. Lows range from 75 inland to near 80 at the beach.
