Amazing Groundhog Day Storm Stats, Maps

UPDATE NOON CENTRAL TIME: Temperatures in Texas now range from 0 F in the north to 68 in the south! Three inches of sleet has accumulated in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Hominy, Oklahoma has received 17 inches, close to the top to heaviest snowfalls in the state, and amounts in Missouri have surpassed a foot as well.

The Groundhog Day storm (i.e. the storm which will be over famous Punxsutawney Phil is looking very impressive on many AccuWeather.com maps this morning. The stats from the storm run the gamut from severe thunderstorms to blizzard conditions. Already today winds have gusted to 70 mph with a strong squall line in Texas, and Miami, Oklahoma has picked up over a foot of snow - while Moweaqua, Illinois has seen 3/4 of an inch of freezing rain and Mount Vernon, Missouri picked up 2 inches of sleet. AccuWeather.com Facebook Fans are uploading reports and pictures of the ice storm.

A look at the National Weather Service advisory map this morning (click to enlarge or zoom to Central US) shows something incredible, possibly historic. With the exception of the West Coast and Arizona, 43 states had advisories sparked by this storm system or the cold air behind it. Wind Chills have already fallen to -54 at Pumpkin Vine, Wyoming with actual temps reaching -41 F at Cow Creek. Nine states were under Blizzard Warnings this morning - the widest spread that I can recall.

Next, check out the MapSpace radar from early this morning with a 2-hour lightning strike overlay (download radar loop with Techsmith AVI Codec). Thunder with sleet or snow was reported by too many airport observations to count.

Texas is indeed the place for impressive storm stats today, with Winter Storm Warnings on one side and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings on the other. Last night, temperatures ranged from 7 at Amarillo to 71 at Nueva Laredo!

Julian Myers, another Facebook Fan, said: A 'Front' crossing Galveston Island, Texas into the Gulf of Mexico this morning. The temperature dropped 25 degrees in 30 minutes!"

A CHILLING FORECAST!

Here is the forecast for Dallas, TX, note the lows of 10 tonight and 8 tomorrow night!

Here is the forecast for Houston, TX, not the kind of numbers typical for Houston, that's for sure, note the 23, 22 degree lows!

This graphic and the one below is from the NWS office in Amarillo, TX, yes, that's right, AMARILLO, no it's no mistake folks!

A MAMMOTH STORM SETS SAIL FROM TEXAS TO ONTARIO TODAY, CHICAGO MAY SEE ONE OF IT'S MOST EXTREME WINTER STORMS IN HISTORY
An Arctic Front which holds air so cold, that it FEELS LIKE NEAR 60 BELOW ZERO IN MONTANA AND NEAR 30 BELOW ZERO IN THE TEXAS PANHANDLE

-By Mark Vogan

A LARGE AREA OF NORTH TEXAS WILL FALL TO BETWEEN 10 AND 5 BELOW ZERO TONIGHT!

Whilst it's currently 0 degrees at Dalhart with a wind chill of 26 below zero and 1 degree at Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle, it's remarkably 68 degrees in Brownsville in extreme south Texas...

The current weather situation across a large swath of the United States is one that is about as extreme as you'll ever witness in a lifetime. The storm system now situated just south and east of Dallas, Texas is rapidly winding up and the reason is 1) to the west/north of the storm the Arctic pile driver is sending temperatures towards or even below zero in the Texas Panhandle with windchills under -20 whilst it's in the 60s, perhaps even 70 to the south and east (note the 70 in New Orleans). As the severe Arctic cold which sent readings to beyond -50 degrees in sections of Montana earlier this morning is pushing southbound down into the rear of the storm, feeding and fuelling it. At the same time, the feeding of cold on it's rear it wraping up the windfield, tightening it and intensifying it's winds, as it does so, the arms of the circulation is actually reacting to the warm, tropical air floating over the Gulf Of Mexico and in essence pulling, sucking it north into the low's frontside, this fuelling of warm, moist, tropical air is resutling the the two perfect ingredients to produce a storm of historic proportion.

The warm, moist feed off the Gulf is firing up and energesing the leading edge cold front and thus strong to quite likely, severe thunderstorms will blossom from east Texas, across the Deep South through this afternoon, increasing the chance of tornadoes, torrential rains, dangerous lightening and damaging winds.

As this air flows around the core and mixes with the super cold air to the north and west, into the rear, extremely intense bursts of snowfall is and will bring whiteouts and we're already seeing that across Oklahoma where as much as 14 inches has fallen in Tulsa and 9 inches on Oklahoma City where temps continue to fall.. Kansas, Oklahoma and even North Texas will easily collect over a foot of snow and drifts may exceed 10 to 15 feet as winds top 50, 60, even 70 mph.

This storm will wreck havoc north and east through cities of Kansas City, St Louis and up into Chicago where a real dangerous situation appears imminent as Lake enhancement will kick in with the systems track just south and east of the city and this means winds blow out of the northeast, across Lake Michigan where waves will likely top 15 to 20, even 25 feet and ride directly into the city. The vast amounts of moisture and with Chicago well under the cold side of the system, means mammoth snow totals are highly likely. How much? Perhaps 18 to 24 inches with massive drifts beyond 15 feet in areas, even inside the loop!
