TODAY'S WEATHER ACROSS SCOTLAND, UK & EUROPE
By Mark Vogan

HIGH PRESSURE DOMINATES BRITAIN, BRINGING DAYTIME SUN AND MODEST TEMPS, NIGHTTIME FROSTS, HEAVY SNOWS IN NORWAY AND SWEDEN, COLDEST AIR OF WINTER FOR MOSCOW!

BRITAIN'S POCKET OF CALM AND SUN

Whilst a "mild high pressure system" sits over the UK and provides mostly sunny skies and light winds by day which is helping hoist daytime readings to pleasant 41-48 (5-8C, the mild air aloft and sunshine is keeping days nice and comfortable, not cold (unless your in an area with lingering fog), the stable air and little in the way of wind is actually providing a little warmth off the sunshine and this is making mid-January feel tropical, compared with just a few weeks ago. The air mass is of sub-tropical origin, not polar/Arctic, indeed this air is modified thanks to it's northerly position, but by day, it's very nice and by night, although skies remain clear and with light winds, frost and ice forms and temps in towns/cities fall to between 27-30 (-3 to -1C), it's January, it's stable, calm weather and these readings aren't really all that cold, well compared to what we endured?

SCANDINAVIA HOLDING ON TO IT'S HEAVY, PERSISTENT SNOWS, MOSCOW, NE EUROPE REMAINING COLD

Whilst central Europe experiences a return to cooler weather after a flood of warmth off the Atlantic and this looks set to intensify into "colder" weather with snows across the Alps, even lower levels in coming days, a persistent air flow from the north-central Atlantic, underneath Britain and up into southern Scandinavia has sparked seemingly continuous, heavy snows and in coming days, temps ease after we've seen persistent cold with daytime single digits (-12 to -15C) in Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki as the core of cold which has remained over far NW Europe slides east and eventually south into the heart of the continent, bringing even colder weather to European Russia. Moscow has seen a return to nearer normal temps (normal being 15 and 4 (-9 and -16C) (see WEATHER TALK BELOW for more details) with daytime highs near 10 and lows near or slightly below zero (-18C) is going to grow colder as the trough deepens and colder air bleeds south.

WEATHER TALK

MOSCOW (Москва), RUSSIA
-2F on Monday, 0F this morning and more single digit highs, near or slightly below zero lows should erase the +9 degrees above normal for month!

AFTER RUNNING -1.4F BELOW NORMAL LAST MONTH, JANUARY'S FIRST 19 DAYS IS RUNNING A WARM +9.1 ABOVE NORMAL...

On January 10th, Moscow saw a warm high of 34 degrees (2C) and a low of 31 degrees (-1C), that averages a daily temperature departure of 23 degrees above normal. Between the 9-14th of the month, the coldest daytime maximum was 31 degrees (-0.5C), normal high for these days is 16 degrees (-9C) incidentally, warm days, came warm nights with the warmest night reading a, barely below freezing, 31 degrees and coldest being a mere 24 degrees (-5C), compare this to an average low of 4 degrees (-16C).

This month as a whole is markedly different to December, 2010 when on the 1st, the high was -3F and the low -10F, making for a daily departure of 32 degrees below normal. Although the remainder of the month wasn't as stunningly cold as here in Britain or across Scandinavia where monthly departures ran to near 20 below normal in spots, Moscow still saw a -1.4F departure from normal. This is in stark contrast to the first 18 days of January, 2011, where Moscow is running 9.1F ABOVE NORMAL. This morning I saw a reading down to at least 0 degrees (-18C) and with yesterday's high and low of 11 and 2 and the previous day of 10 and -2 and colder weather looking set to stay, if not intensify as a stronger push of Arctic air looks set to bleed down from the pole, the departure from normal will likely fall closer towards normal for the final 12 days of January, though the departure os so much above normal, it's likely to remain between 3-5 degrees above normal.

TODAY'S CONDITIONS (LOCALLY)
After partly clear overnight skies which allowed some ice and frost to form on wet surfaces, it became cloudier before sunrise, holding temps up, however it was clearer and colder further south into Dumfries and Galloway with a more substantial frost. Overall it was a pleasant day across most areas of central and southern Scotland with good spells of sun, feeling pleasant with little wind and temps in the low 40s, not bad for Jan 19th!

Thanks for reading.
