TODAY'S WEATHER ACROSS SCOTLAND, UK & EUROPE

HIGH PRESSURE DOMINATES UK WEATHER THIS WEEK, COOLER TEMPS!

IT WAS EXTREMELY ICY IN AREAS THIS MORNING OVER SCOTLAND

After overnight rains which came in between dropping temps and frost and ice formation, this created a morning where it was deceaving. I personally didn't think it was too bad. Sure, it was frosty, clear and cool and I understood that rains had came and went during the overnight, however, it wasn't until I drove northwards from Dumfries on the A76 where I realised the danger. Cars and trucks travelled at 10 mph and I wondered why, only to see a vehicle on it's roof. I felt the truck slidding, and yes I was travelling at only 10 mph!. Only a few miles further on and another vehicle on it's roof... another in a ditch and then once up by Thornhill, there was another on it's roof..

Indeed, this busy trunk road linking Dumfries and Kilmarnock was NOT salted, why I will never know and it was clear that temps were to drop towards or slightly beyond freezing! I COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW SLIPPERY THE ROAD WAS AND APPARENTLY, THERE WERE OTHER ROADS IN PERTHSHIRE, ANGUS AND OTHER DISTRICTS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH ICING... Tonight may see similar issues, so please take care!

COLD BECOMING MORE IMPRESSIVE IN THE CITIES, YOU'D EXPECT TO BE COLD FOR MID-JANUARY!

MOSCOW AND MINNEAPOLIS ENDURING DAYTIME SINGLE DIGITS THIS WEEK!

CURRENT READINGS: MOSCOW, RUSSIA 7 DEGREES, MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA 11 DEGREES.

TYPICAL SCENE IN MOSCOW DURING THE COLDEST DAYS OF WINTER!

SO FAR TEMPERATURES IN BOTH MOSCOW, RUSSIA AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA HAVEN'T BEEN TOO BAD. TWO CITIES OF A SIMILAR WINTER CLIMATE, BOTH IN THE HEART OF A COLD, NORTHERN CONTINENTAL INTERIOR AND EXPOSED TO HARSH ARCTIC AIRFLOWS.

IT'S INTERESTING, BUT BOTH ARE ACTUALLY SEEING THEIR COLDEST TEMPERATURES OF THE 2010-11 SEASON THIS WEEK WITH BOTH ENDURING SINGLE-DIGITS HIGHS. WHILST MOSCOW EXPERIENCES NIGHTS CLOSE TO ZERO, MINNEAPOLIS IS SET FOR A SERIES OF DAYS WHICH STRUGGLES TO REACH 2 OR 3 DEGREES AND MAY PLUMMET TOWARDS -10 OR LOWER BY NIGHT. WHILST MOSCOW MAY NOT SEE JUST AS COLD, IT LIVES UP TO IT'S REPUTATION MORE THIS WEEK THAN IT DID LAST WITH COLDER AIR, HEAVY SNOW AND HARSH CONDITIONS. LAST WEEK, TEMPS WERE BARELY DROPPING BELOW FREEZING WHILST MINNEAPOLIS, THOUGH COLD, WASN'T FEELING IT'S MORE TYPICAL "NASTY COLD" IT'S MORE ACCUSTOMED TO AT THIS TYPICALLY FRIGID PERIOD OF THE YEAR!

STAY TUNED for updates on just how cold the midwest US and Moscow get!

Tranquil weather ahead...for now

LOCAL UPDATE

After an extremely cold week with temperature departures averaging -24°F throughout the city, finally the sun came out on Sunday and tranquil weather rules the region as of now. Even though temperatures at the morning remain at a chilly 8-10°C, afternoons are milder with highs around 25°C. However cold and dampness looms next weekend. A powerful cold front moving southward from Northern Canada will bring down the temps again yet it is to see if it will challenge last week's cold.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Expect nice conditions, partially sunny skies with chilly nights and milder afternoons throughout the region until Friday when the cold front will arrive. Temps should be around 5°C and no higher than 12°C during the last days of this week. Also rain and drizzle are likely for those days. Throughout the region expect cold conditions in the latter part of this week with lows ranging near freezing for most of Coahuila and high terrains of Nuevo León, while milder conditions will be present at southern Tamaulipas.

TODAY'S CONDITIONS (LOCALLY)
A cooler morning which saw the off and on formation of frost with clear skies and then showers which progressed through the area, this created a dangerous glaze of ice over wet roads as temps dropped below freezing. In areas of Perth and Kinross and Dumfries and Galloway, this was particularly bad with countless accidents. The day was generally sunny and showers off and on. A good bit cooler than over the past weekend and nearly 10 days lower on daytime highs. The low of 27 was also 20 degrees cooler than two mornings ago.

Thanks for reading.
