WORST OF WINTER OVER FOR UK BUT COLD AND SNOW WILL RETURN IN A MORE "COME AND GO" FASHION THE REST OF THE SEASON.

So far, so good! I am refering to my winter forecast, released back on October 31st in which stated that cold and snow would arrive beyond the 20th of November and last throught December, warming up around Christmas, indeed after a cold Christmas and a 9 day stretch with highs failing to reach freezing, the return of Atlantic air came the day after Boxing Day. Sure enough, appart from old, dirty piles of shovelled snow and ice at the sides of driveways and pavements as well as some stubborn patches of ice that are infused to the sub-freezing surface, the evidence of what will likely rank as Britain's coldest December on record is gone, at least with the naked-eye. I say that because the after effects of of 30-days in the freezing lives on. You only have to look at the news if your not directly effected yourself.

The good news is, it looks likely that our winter weather, in terms of severity and duration of locked-in cold and snow is over for the season, HOWEVER, as you'll have read in my forecast, though the worst is likely over by Christmas and I feel confident still with that idea, both cold and snow is highly likely to return "off and on" throughout the rest of the winter. Yes, we may see some "very cold and snowy" periods that last perhaps a week to 10 days, particularly February and or March, but the truely WORST OF WINTER is over.

I am very, very pleased with how things have turned out so far with my ideas as my timing has been close to total accuracy and please don't read that and think I'm being arrogant. I did state clearly a few key things that I believed would occur.

1) the cold would arrive from Nov 20th onwards.

2) the worst of winter's cold and snow would occur BEFORE Christmas.

3) There would be a return to milder Atlantic air around Christmas and into New Year.

WINTER'S WORST WILL SETTLE OVER CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE WITHIN THE NEXT 10 DAYS!

AMERICA TO COOL IN WEST, WARM IN THE EAST

As you can see from the AccuWeather graphic below, a new trough will dive into the heart of the Great Basin around New Year bringing a surge of frigid air down from the Arctic. At the same time, ridging will counteract the western trough and thus 60s and even 70s will rule the Southeast with 40s and 50 stretching northeastwards into the Northeast.

AFTER BRITAIN FLIRTED WITH NORMAL TEMPERATURES THIS WEEK, COLD AIR WILL RETURN FOR NEW YEAR AND NEXT WEEK

The AccuWeather graphic below shows the milder Atlantic air that has brought some relief this week to the UK and western Europe, albeit, modest since the ground is frozen and there's a lot of snow which has refridgerated the Atlantic's southwest wind flow and meant that though southwest England and western areas of Britain have seen highs top between 8-12C, as those winds have blown across the frozen, snowfields of the UK and melted much of the snow, by the time they reach Manchester the air's only mustered 2-3C for highs, 1-2C east of the Pennines in places such as York and Newcastle. Easterlies blowing in off the North Sea has certainly made the thaw only noticable with snowmelt, certainly not the feel of the air.

The ECMWF graphic shows the current upper-atmospheric pattern across the UK, noteice the yellow blob over Britain? That's the milder Atlantic air pushing up via ridging. The blue blob over central-eastern Europe is the Arctic pool of air which was over us at Christmas.

Unfortunately, not only does Scandinavia, which in areas has endured it's coldest December in 110 years, it is once again filling with Arctic air and like Norway, Sweden and Denmark, it appears the trough will drop back over us just in time for January 2nd! More on this in the coming days...

NORTH ATLANTIC AND ARCTIC OSCILLATION SHIFTING POSITIVE
Cold, Stormy Pattern on Both Sides of the Atlantic ends in stunning fashion with Coldest Christmas in UK history and Historic Blizzard for Northeast US

It appears the OVERALL and LARGE-SCALE atmosphere over the Northern Hemisphere is changing after being stuck for some 4 weeks in a high-latitude blocking pattern. The high-latitude blocking was instigated by a change in atmospheric pressure over the North Pole in which warmth travelled north and this forced the Arctic air that was incubated over the weeks which followed summer southwards. The work of both the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Arctic Oscillation and their amazing ability in bringing Arctic conditions to both the eastern USA as well as the northwest of Europe was fullfilled to the max. For the UK, the November 25-December 26th period was likely the greatest display of winter in at least 100 years.

The classic "Greenland block" formed, this being a large ridge of high pressure which migrates from the sub-tropical central Atlantic northwards to a general position over the vast icesheet of Greenland. This high, means troughs then form either side and thus, way up at 30,000 feet and beyond in the upper levels of the atmosphere, the jet gets displaced northwards into the Arctic and both east and west of the ridge, the jet gets pushed further south than normal thanks to it's northward displacement caused by the Greenland high pressure cell. The fact that the jet then becomes "highly amplified" or meridional" means, it transports air that is over the Arctic circle southwards as it snakes south towards the base of the trough, that trough was deep across the UK airspace as well as over the eastern US. Within that trough, Arctic air pours southwards towards the base of the trough and unfortunately, the base was down over the Iberian penninsula. Britain was flooded with bitter Arctic air, the base of the trough to the west, over the Eastern US was down across the Gulf Coast states and Florida where record cold occured...

The power of the "negative" Arctic Oscillation dictates HOW COLD the air within these troughs get and with many reasons behind the stronger negative AO and NAO's as well as their longer duration in a negative phase is debatable, although I have my own theories on this one. The last gasp of the negative phase of both oscillations was displayed in stunning style as the UK, having endured potentially it's coldest December in recorded history indeed ended the month with the coldest Christmas Day on record with highs throughout barely topping freezing and the day which started with lows ranging from -10 to -18C (14 to 0F). As for the USA, they saw a breathtaking blizzard impact the Northeast US, all but shutting down the corridor between Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. It's said, Central Park's 20+ inch snowfall is the greatest December fall since 1948.

Frozen Loch Neagh, central Northern Ireland (Image from The Belfast Telegraph)

Now what will be interesting is as we see the transition from negative to positive, we're looking at warming in the same areas that have been so cold. The UK has lost a great deal of snowcover over the past 36 to 48 hours following Boxing Day, nights are above freezing and days remain chilly, misty and murky where snow remains. Along the coast, temperatures are soaring to between 8-12C (48 to 52F) whereas just back on Christamas Day, a low of -18C was reported at Altnaharra, in far north Scotland. Even Boxing day saw most places struggle to reach freezing, sleet and snow was flying and temps which fell below freezing in most spots.
Devin Toporek, Author of "The Northeast Quadrant" standing out in the storm in the heart of Times Square, New York City

By New Year's Day 2010, I believe it's safe to say that all but the hills across Britain will have have and everywhere else will be bare once again but ice and frozen ground will continue to keep daytime highs stubbornly down and pavements and roadways slippery for some time. Look forward interior sections of the UK to continue seeing highs only at between 2-5C, eastern areas may continue to see only 2-3C as easterlies continue to chill North Sea coasts. The southwest of England, much of Wales, western Scotland and Northern Ireland will enjoy 6 to 12C highs..

After a major clean-up has been completed over the Northeast US, temperatures next week appear to be heading towards the 40s, whilst colder air filters into the Western US.

Overall the cold pools will shift east and has already done so across Europe. I believe we're entering a new 25 to 30-day cycle where mild Atlantic air will rule the show across Britain and western Europe whilst the core of cold will hit central and eastern Europe where a significant blast of winter will may folks from Warsaw, Berlin, Moscow shiver.

For the US, from Reno, Denver, across to Minneapolis and Chicago, colder times will rule, whilst east of Detroit, milder weather will be the dominant feature of the weather... well, at least till late January..

The final days of January may see a return to colder times for both the eastern USA and western Europe... Stay tuned!

THE SNOW HAS BEEN ON THE GROUND ONE MONTH!

After a 5" dumping of snow on November 28th and a building of snowpack to a maximum of 8.5 inches in my back garden here in Lennoxtown, my garden is all but bare now but has seen a full calender month's worth of snow on the ground nontheless. There was more snow this morning but thanks to persistent moderate rainfall and temperatures above freezing, the melt has contonued for some 48 hours nonstop, all be eroding the snowcover and leaving only old frozen snow piles behind!

GLASGOW WAS 15 DEGREES (F) BELOW NORMAL FROM 1-26 DECEMBER 2010

Though it's likely Glasgow will end the month around 14 below normal, I wanted to point out the remarkable departure from normal the city of Glasgow, Scotland has seen this month. I would love to know whether this city has seen a lower departure from normal that was seen this month, perhaps there were even greater departures back during the little ice age, the period from the 1700s to late 1800s.

TODAY'S CONDITIONS
Snowcover: (Patchy snow and ice)
The remaining snowcover is all but patches of old ice and frozen snow as persistent light rain continues to create a messy landscape of standing water and extremely slippery pavements and roads as this urban street flooding is freezing on the ground as surface temps are still well below freezing. However, despite still cool air and daytime readings only mustering 36 degrees despite mild Atlantic air back in control, the snow is near gone completely. Only patches of snow and ice remain.
