2010 looking more and more likely to be Britain's coldest on record and yet more heavy snow and low temperatures persistent, no let up in sight!
Mark Vogan reports from the Beech Tree Inn, Dumgoyne, Stirlingshire, discussing the major ice problems as well as the snow across the country
With yet another "fresh wave" of Arctic air which drained southwards during the mid part of this week and now covers UK airspace, bringing with it crippling snows firstly to the Scottish North, now Northern Ireland with it's worst snows apparently in 25 years according to Meteorologists, England and Wales are also experiencing harsh, snow, ice and cold.
The pattern doesn't appear to want to let up before Christmas at the very earliest and unfortunately it's looking possible that we may enter January and remain in the freezer. This folks, is a remarkable period of cold and especially when looking at the past few years and how ALL OF A SUDDEN Britain appears to have returned to mini-ice-age conditions or certainly those winter's seen in the 1960s and 1970s.
Christmas looks to be white for much of the UK for a second straight year, that is amazing in itself, what's also amazing is the fact that every night, temperatures are really plunging into the -6 to -8C range for most inland areas, days are having a real hard time warming to freezing, frost depth within the ground continue to deepen, pipes, vehicles, man and machine are struggling to cope with the return to "real winter" in Britain.
So, what's really going on here? A blip or is nature telling us something? I remain firm in the belief that winter's have gotten a lot colder and more like those back during the cold era and this period of cold that appears to have commence in 2008-09 is the signal to change for the longer term. Just look at those records that are falling, seemingly each and every day. The length of time that snow and ice remain on the ground, the amount of days and night with sub-freezing temperatures. It's no coincidence that our sun, the primary driver of earth's climate is at it's quietest/weakest in over 100 years. The increase in volcanic activity and other things that are occuring are very likely playing a role in our winter's.

On Friday, December 17, 2010, the W.D. forecasted (only) by Vagaries was precipitating rain/snow in Central and eastern Kashmir, and in the mountain ranges of H.P. and Utteranchal.See accumulated rain map (daily) in links for ready ref.
Snow was falling on Friday in Ladakh and Central Kashmir ranges, with Leh at high of 7.5c today.
W.D. is not expected to remain beyond Saturday.
Meanwhile, an Easterly wave is expected to bring some precipitation to the T.N. coast from Tuesday for a couple of days.
Otherwise, not much is seen on the precipitation front in the sub-continent till Wednesday, 22nd. December.
Vagries precipitation/Temperature forecast will be updated on the 18th. for the next 3 days.(Mumbai Forecast updated today).
A fall in the night temperatures in the Northern and NW sectors could be expected from Saturday night (due to the current W.D.).
A fall of 2c in the north, and 2/3 in central (M.P./Vidharbha) and western India (Guj./Mah.) could be expected.
Lows in North India on Friday,17th. Dec.:
Darbuk (Ladakh): -23c, Leh: -13c, Kargil: -10c, Srinagar: -5c,
Adampur (Punjab) 1.2c,
Lowest in Mah. : Wardha: 4.8c, Nasik: 7c.
Across the border in Pakistan, lows like -8c was recorded at Quetta and 2c in Islamabad. Karachi was at 12c. Not expecting a further drop next 2/3 days here.
