Ice covers pavements and roads, it's like walking on polished ice!
After a day which warmed to a balmy 45 degrees and 5-degrees warmer than it got yesterday, the improvement continues, at least in temperature anyway whilst flooding both in urban and rural areas cause issues, it's all about that stubborn ice that is becoming ever more slippery under foot and extremely dangerous, especially now that snowmelt water now covers it.
Whilst driving today, I am amazed at just how much snowcover is completely gone, especially just south of Glasgow and even in the Glasgow suburbs. Whilst here where once 8.5 inches lay, streets may be still snow-ice covered along the pavements with dirty brown piles of snow on street corners or either side of driveways but roads are now bare and have plenty of standing water. Between burst pipes and coninued ice issues, flooding is now becoming an increased problem and will grow as we enter the weekend. What makes it worse is the fact that we've seen such cold, that the ground is harder than perhaps otherwise would be and snow deeper than otherwise would be, therefore greater urban flooding will be a real concern as this water has nowhere to go. The ground is too hard and can't soak up the runoff from snowmelt.

Amazing Ice Formations seen in rivers, streams... also amazing is the fact that the Clyde flowing through central Glasgow froze a second year running!
Here is some video of large chunks of ice that have been pushed ashore by strong currents on this Dumfries and Galloway river which a few days ago was frozen over. This is near Crawfordjohn on the road which links to A76 at Sanquhar with the M74.
It was amazing driving up the A76 trunk road between Dumfries and Kilmarnock where the roads twist and turns along the shore of the River Nith, looking down at the ice-encrusted waters. In some spots vast chunks or slabs of ice line the frozen shoreline where the current and rapid flow has pushed large chunks ashore or against rocks. I also stopped along a river (not sure of the name), flowing along and under the road which links Sanquhar with the M74 and passes through Crawfordjohn. Whilst the river flowed ice-free, the shore was lined with large, chunks of ice in which covered this river for a time and then broke up, the force of flow and currents clearly broke up the sheet of ice covering the water and oushed and rippled the ice up against the banks, slabs of ice I saw measured several inches thick! This little river, flowed deep within the hills and across the expanisice, remote moorland of South Lanarkshire. Even seeing the ice remain on the Clyde in Glasgow as well as frozen bodies of water all the way south in the heart of the village of Castle Douglas, near the Solway Firth where England meets Scotland was quite amazing.
GLASGOW RUNNING A STUNNING 17 BELOW NORMAL FOR THE FIRST 9 DAYS OF DECEMBER 2010, CAN FRIGID DECEMBER 1995 BE BEATEN IF COLD AND SNOW RETURNS?
For a second winter in a row, the River Clyde where it flows beneath the Kingston Bridge within the city centre of Glasgow, a solid sheet of ice covers the frigid waters... I wonder when the last time the Clyde within Glasgow has froze two winter's in a row, perhaps the 1960s, funnily enough, it seems the severity of both snow and cold together has been more severe than anything seen last winter, the 1960s has been a decade which has repeatedly shown up when comparing the crippling cold and snow we've just witnssed.
YES, THE SEVERITY OF COLD WE'VE JUST SEEN, WAS JUSTIFIED BY ME.. THE FACT THAT WE'VE SEEN THE COLDEST AIR IN GLASGOW SINCE DECEMBER 1995 AND THE FACT THAT I STATED MY CONCERN THAT THE PATTERN WAS EERILY SIMILAR TO DECEMBER 1995 IS NO COINCIDENCE!
December 1995 was a comparison I was going for in my forecast for the severity of cold I believed was coming for cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh and would arrive in December and BEFORE Christmas was spot on, I'm sorry but I must point that out as it's important this isn't missed.. I score my forecast according to reality! I did believe that numbers in comparison to the brutal cold snap that was seen at the end of December 1995 may come close this December. Indeed, numbers have never dropped into single digits F, during any month since December 1995 and what excites and greatly interests me is that indeed my instinct of brutal cold returning 15 years to the month did indeed have merit. There is talk that if December's brutal cold and snow returns, this month may beat the coldest December on record for ther UK which was reached in 1981 as long as it returns to cold which it appears it will according to models.

The projected weekend cold has arrived, albeit a day earliarrect)|utmcmd=(none); __utmb=15067th. December).
On saturday morning, in the Northern most areas, the Kashmir region minimum temperatures have dipped considerably with Shyok lowest at -23c, Leh dropping to -16c and Srinagar to -5.2c.
In H.P, Kalpa saw -5c, and Simla 3.8c.
Coming Southwards, Delhi fell to 6.2c today morning, yet 1c more than projected.
Punjab state has still to "react" to the cold spell,though nights are around 6/7c, and Amritsar lowest at 5.8c.
But Rajasthan has fallen to expected levels, with Mt. Abu seeing 1.6c and Churu reading 1.9c on Saturday morning. Most cities in Rajasthan are between 7/8c on Saturday.
Across the border. Temperatures showed a sharp fall right upto the Southern coastal city of Karachi, which slid down to 7.6c ! Islamabad recorded 1.7c.
In Mah. the lowest was in Nasik at 10c.
Gujarat: I have my doubts about the genuinity of Nalliya's (Gujarat) readings. The town reads 3c on Saturday morning. Its readings are consistently lower than the regional readings, and maybe the instrument needs re-callibration.
Towns like Rajkot and Amreli in Saurashtra have recorded 8c, and A'hmbad at 9.9c
Mumbai S'Cruz measured upto the forecasted 16c, and Colaba 19c.
Current cold spell expected to last till Tuesday.

WARM ATLANTIC AIR IS NOW IN FULL CONTROL AND HAS ERASED WHAT WAS OVER 7 INCHES ON THE GROUND YESTERDAY, DOWN TO A MERE 3 INCHES THIS EVENING AS CLOUDS CONTROLLED THE SKIES AND TEMPS WARMED INTO IN THE MID 40S.
