Great Britain under Severe Weather Alert through this afternoon
70-80 MPH GUSTS MAY SWEEP ACROSS BRITAIN THIS AFTERNOON WHILST HAIL AND RAIN BATTER MY WINDOWS AS I WRITE THIS!!

Storm as of 1500 UTC, Thursday (Credit: U. K. Met Office)

10.30PM UPDATE: Capel Curig endures a wind gust to 91 mph!

5.30PM UPDATE: As of 4pm, according to Met Office observations, the pressure has fallen to 949mb and winds have been SUSTAINED at 54 mph and gusts to 72 mph at Aberdaron, Wales. Castlederg, Northern Ireland has reported sustained winds to 34 mph and gusts to 60 mph and those gusts were higher earlier this afternoon. Pressures there have fallen from 970mb at 10am to 964mb as of 4pm and continue to fall.

The rapidly deepening Atlantic low continues to progress eastwards and has already increasing winds now across the vast majority of the UK landmass and unfortunately this situation looks set to worsen as we enter the PM hours.

Whilst 50 to 60 mph gusts have ripped up the western flank of the country and likely downed a few tree limbs, branches and perhaps even cut power to some exposed communities open to those howling southwest winds, the risk increases this afternoon for a batch of 80 to 100 mph winds along those very areas that have seen the worst so far.

What's slightly less typical with this system than normal areas of low pressure is that it's expected to support a squall which will march west to east across Britain from the southwest of England, all the way to the Northern Isles and within that "batch of very nasty weather", areas, populated areas, may see winds gusting to between 70-80 mph, yes we're talking major population centres that are well inland from the usual trouble areas along the coast which typically endure those severe-gale-force winds.

WHERE MIGHT THOSE HARD-HIT AREAS BE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING?

40-50 mph gusts likey through today over Devon, Cornwall and south coast areas but may well increase TONIGHT to 50-60 mph!

60-70mph winds likely for coastal Cumbria, Lancashire and perhaps spreading their way up the Solway Firth into Carlisle, Gretna, Dumfries and up the coast of Ayrshire with higher ground seeing downed trees and powerlines.

WARNING TO DRIVERS!

If your driving the open stretch where the M6 meets the M74 into Scotland, watch if your driving a high-sided vehicle, this is the set-up for getting BLOWN OVER! Here and many higher routes exposed out of the south and southwest!

Though here in the Scottish Central Lowlands, there is little wind, however, like many inland areas that are looking outside and saying, where's this wind meant to be, it's likely that each batch of squally showers and gusty winds blow through, winds will likely increase. I do believe that at least 50 to 60 mph winds are likely to race across the central belt through mid to late afternoon and possibly into this evening. Damaging gusts are highly possible and there is a chance that anywhere high-up and exposed, no matter how far inland you are may be suseptible to gusts of 70-80 mph.

ANY WEST COAST LOCATION MAY SEE 100 MPH GUSTS LATER TODAY!

I am most concerned about a pocket of winds that are likely to take aim at exposed coasts, anywhere from Pembrokeshire, up the Welsh, English and Scottish coast as well as mountain tops of even the Pennines, including ALL islands (Outer and Inner Hebrides) have a chance at seeing 100 mph gusts later today and or tonight!

SUPPORTING THIS DYNAMIC ATMOSPHERIC SITUATION IS A 170 MPH JET STREAM THAT AIMING STRAIGHT INTO BRITAIN AT THE 30,000 TO 40,000 FOOT LEVEL, THIS AS WELL AS A POWERFUL AND DEEPENING AREA OF LOW PRESSURE AT 945MB SUPPORTS A SITUATION IN WHICH THESE POWERFUL MID LEVEL WINDS WHICH TEND TO BE MUCH HIGHER THAN THOSE AT THE SURFACE CAN WITH JET STREAM DYNAMICS PUSH HIGHER MID-LEVELS WINDS DOWN TO THE SURFACE IF ALIEGNMENT IS RIGHT!

Latest UK Observations as of 9am from the Met Office....

Kirkwall (Orkney), sustained at 44, gusting to 59
Altnaharra, gusts to 56
Wick, gusts to 55
Aberdaron (Wales) sustained at 44, gusts to 56
Lake Vyrnwy (Wales), gusts to 57
Bridlington, sustained at 45, gusts to 56
Langdon Bay, sustained at 39, gusts to 59

Tempeartures have increased markedly through the overnight...

Charlwood, Surrey even at 2am this morning was at -2C or 28F, now as of 9am it's up to 9.6C or 49F, winds went from literally calm to sustained S winds of 18 mph and gusts to 36 mph.

St Mary's has a 9am reading of 13.6C or 56F.
